I also used to sell these/the whole line up. This particular set is beautiful, and talk about a wonderful sound. If anyone ever gets a chance to sit down and listen to a set that functions correct sit back and enjoy. These are one of my favorite speakers.

I had a pair of those, but sold them for a mere $350.00 a couple months ago.

Good speakers, but not the best...keep looking.

If they are anything like there predessors the AMT3 "rock monitors" they have got to be good. Nice punchy base (with a gutsy amp) smooth midrange and the Heil motion ribbon tweeters were so nice.

If you had a pair of 1D's in that condition that was a foolish sale at that price, and the guy who bought them got a great deal. I think if I remember correct the price on them at the time was $1500.00 pr. That was their flagship model in that series. ESS has since gone by by to a German company who has purchased all the rights and continued to run the technology, and I believe their flag ship runs in the $18,000 to $22,000 a pair range. Very high end and top quality. The speaker company back in the 80's when they were going strong were way ahead of their time. Here is a pic of their flagship in the late 90's awesome speaker. These went for $1500.00 on the bay.

Bad grille cloth choice. Those would look super in black. Is that the same "Heil" as in Bob Heil of Grateful Dead/JBL "wall of sound" fame, or just coincidence?

Yes I think the grill cloth is ugly, they came black from the factory, looked much better that color. As far as the rest of you question .
Oskar Heil (1908-1994) was a twentieth-century electrical engineer and inventor.

that was my first thought, that black would be awesome, but the "camel" was growing, kind of a "simpatico" look. My F's were in 1970's brown (like Bose 901s) but I dyed the tents black and it really updated the appearance nicely.

not unless bob's real name was Dr. Oskar Heil

I fancy Altec 2-ways, but never could get an Altec horn to meet the same level of performance as the transducers. I tried pairing many things with Altec 414-16B's (my personal favourites). Alas, horn loading always threw everything off- not just the time. I decided I would try domed tweeters. It was an improvement, to be certain. Alas, getting a "tweeter" to go down to 800Hz and still handle the UHF with class is a tall order. A pair of Accuton large format ceramic dome tweeters came as close as any I tried. I ultimately gave up my quest and moved on.

I never tried Heils. I wonder if a pair of Heil tweeters would have done one better. They are comfortable in 700Hz crossover points (so I have read). The result would have to be heavily attenuated. A Deqx (or similar) might be in order to set her proper. Mating a ribbon to a transducer is always a trade off, but it might be worth a go to an interested party (not me anymore). The Altec 414-16 (in pairs) makes wonderful <800Hz music. A Heil tweeter to do the rest might make for a world class 2-way rig. ;)

Nate.

The fact that the 847A crossed a 414 to the 3000B at 3K was astounding. Fantastic driver that 414.
