View Full Version : My mind is made up...Valencias wanted!

Mitchell

After much research and thought, I have decided I want Altec Valencia's 846b. That fits my buget and home. At first I wanted Altec Magnificients.....I was nuts. They are too large for most homes. Anyways I want a set of Valencia's in mint condition of course. Price is no object in my dreams. Actualy the closer to where I live I am willing to pay more, espically if located in Canada. This way I do not have to spend too much money on travel (I will pick them up). Also if in Canada no taxes need to be paid at border (14%). I will travel no more than about 600 miles one way (unless it is 100% showroom condition). Purchase will depend on condition, price and location. Sent me private e-mail with price, location and condition. I may ask for pics for serious inquiries. Oh, I am not money bags....so the price must be reasonable. My guide is E-bay.

P.S. Any chance someone close to me (in Canada and 80 miles max) has a set that I can listen to? I will bring a 12 pack of beer (no kidding).

Zilch,

Why are you banging your head?

Mitchell - Good luck finding a mint pair. Expect to pay about $1K to $1500 for a good set. Don't expect mint condition, because you can always refinish the cabinets. Just a thought, though...

Good luck on your quest.

your mind is made up that you want them ? AND you have never heard them ?

maybe that's why we have the Zilch's split head club running?

you could also fabricate them yourself....

you lose on the original cabinet front,
but gain cash (normally) and
possibly have a better made box (if you build it well)

And really, if you made up your mind, you got to have them without hearing them, your crazy, nuts, lost, and missing something. :banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:

I have a set as we all know that I'm working on for a friend, and they are not that impressive at all, and missing a lot on the top end, with weak bass factory. I can move more air with a nice fart then they can. A pair of 250TI's will eat them for lunch!!!!!!!!

All Crazy comments aside -
The real question is: how much is he willing to spend on a good set of speakers.
Has he got any now, if so what, what does he think of them?

No, don't get me started. ;)

You have the early version - 846A's. The 846B's are very different and have more bass than you could handle. Never a need to add a subwoofer.

I know what you are talking about regarding the bass on the 846As, because I had a pair of heathkit valencias that are basically the 846A's, and I was not impressed with the bass extension.

Come on over if you don't believe me...

One of the nicest hi-fis I've heard was late model Valencias driven by Conrad-Johnson tube gear.

They aren't Valencias, but they will do. They are in Cleveland,Ohio so plan on taking the weekend to do the deal. I've driven to Toronto in a day(19hrs), so it's a piece of cake over the weekend. Take a large SUV or van and some help. Good luck.

Can you please stop with your immaturity. If you have never heard my speakers or owned a set, stop commenting on my opinions. What you are doing is very annoying. Keep your comments to yourself if you dont have anything nice to say.

As you can clearly see in your omage to "OHM F" thread, I did not comment on your opinions on those speakers because I have never heard a pair. So, please stop the silly remarks - they are quickly turning annoying.

Am I the only one that finds them annoying?

Thank you.

:)

Storm,
You could never get any amount of bass out of those speakers even if you wanted to with 12.5 watts, also regardless of what you think they are pretty much the same speaker as the 846B's. Yes, you get 3db more output with a port but the vents on the sides of the horns in the 846A's are ports, as Jack, and many have explained to you. :banghead: Second you would not know good, or killer bass if it jumped up and bit you in the A$$. As far as the audio world goes you have a lot left to figure out, and from your learning curve it is gonna take you a long time, give me a fricken break with your 12.5 watts. I'm running 500 watts in my 2 channel room, and working with 4000 watts in my HT room that is 10% of the rated power of the Cine Capri Theater here in Scottsdale, go see a movie there, If you do go see a movie there you better bring a roll of toilet paper because you might have to wipe after the show. Also please don't tell me what I can't handle, as I said before you don't have a clue!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

J/S-S1A :flamed::flamed::flamed::flamed::flamed:

My Error: We went from a 12.5 watt receiver to a Box Store P.O.S HK receiver over separates. Sorry for the mistake. Still no bass with that unit unless you run the LOUDNESS on and the Bass all the way up.

So what. Some people like certain low powered amps, one advantage of sensitive speakers is that it gets the power monkey off your back and you can choose amps based on tone and texture.

I've heard Valencias make good bass and I've been a bass player and drummer for over 35 years, you gonna tell me I don't know good bass?

Our friend Storm may suffer from an excess of enthusiasm but he doesn't bumrap other people's gear or tell them what they should like as you do.

Tom,
None of this is directed to you, and by your experience and knowledge you have a clue. Second the comment of tone and texture comment makes no senses because he only made that purchase because of us telling him he needed more power, but he did not follow the advice correctly. And as far as the bum rapping goes, that is not what I'm after. I'm tired of being stroked by him. He makes promises and does not follow through, and repeatedly does not follow good advice. He also does not understand his and my Valencias that I'm working are the same thing and tonal differences are minimal, and I don't tell him what he should like, I make recommendations for him to get more out of what he is dealing with, and I used to do it with an open door. But as I stated before I'm tired of being stroked by him, and prior to my closed door decision, he was still invited over with good intension's, and help.
Good talking to you Tom.

All kiddin' aside those KRKs are the best $200 I ever spent on speakers. They do the small speaker thing as well as other such speakers I listened to that cost several times as much, you know, "audiophile" speakers like Coincidents, Totems, Quads and such.

Wonder how my L200b would stack up against Storms Valencias. I added 3106 crossovers and 2405 tweeters similar to Storms Altec setup. For powering the L200b I have a Onkyo 4500 receiver (50x2 watts). Will this receiver smooth out the LE85 and 2405 and still give me plenty of bass from the 136a woofers like he did with the Valencias woofers? I still remember listening to a very dirt cheap set of small speakers and matching low budget receiver that sounded terrific playing in a old commercial garage with thick concrete walls. Who knows but maybe everything just fell perfectly into place with Storms listening room, Altec speakers/audio equipment.
