Those are nice. They need some work, to be sure, but they'd be sweet when complete.
Oh well, too far away, and even if a local guy packed and shipped them I'd fear driver damage given the condition of the woofers.

Oh that's just what I need...someone dangling some nice 4341's at me for $1k. Sure I could load up them up in the wagon and pick them up. It's only a 6 hour trip. Each way. Like I'm ever going to see a nice pair in Boston in my lifetime.
Why do I keep reading this forum...it just leads to a house full of speakers...
Oh wait - that's a GOOD thing ! :)

Gee you would think after spending $$ to redo the 15's and 10's, new diaphrams and xover caps it would be worth it.
For the $$ that would entail, one could fabricate new speakers with up-to-date components and get better performance.
BUT we gotta have the blue....:)
This will get interesting in the last few minutes.

It already is interesting; Look at the bids! This brings me to my complaint about the new eBay bidding policy (ID's hidden). The new system helps protect shill bidders. It already looks like there might be some shill bidding going on. Anyone else hate this new system? Why does all the good stuff seem to have have "foul play" written all over it!? :biting:
Besides, shipping would be an absolute killer- especially for me in down under. :( Back to my other projects...

This is true, but if you do this under 12 hours your are stuck with the item, second if you run up the bid to figure out the reserve, and retract e-bay keeps track of this action and everyone sees it. I also think that if this is abused your e-bay days are over.

Maybe not, but there was a forum member a little over a month ago that offered a pair on the forum in mint condition for $1800 o.b.o.
If that bidder that stopped $7.00 below the high bidder does not leap over him at auction end, he just might be a shill bidder:(

That is the point - it is a *disposable* ID that can get only rewards NOT punishment. I could walk over to my neighbors house and set up a dozen accounts and ebay would be clueless and the commodore 64 they use ( and all share ) in their out-sourced overseas security dept would never figure it out.
Just how many times have we seen classic JBL big speakers relisted over and over by the same russian scammers?? And ebay couldn't even detect it with their powerful "search engine" that of course finds even the tiniest reference to the "7 dirty words" that hold up new postings?
Maybe ebay should have a max amount of $$ a "less that one day" bidder can post without getting express agreement from the seller who can verify the account!
Back when ebay first started, anybody could give anybody feedback for whatever reason and through the years their reaction to fraud and abuse is to limit what the people who PAY the fees ( sellers ) can do.
Nice system but hey - it's a monopoly so who cares....
Wish I had the bucks but then the 4315's would have to go.

Heather,
E-bay keeps track of everything. If you use multiple user Id's that info is carried into your current one in the background, which the general public can see. Also if you ever intend to buy your private information is all related to an address and a credit card. They will cancel you over and over if rules are violated over and over. This usually occurs on the third offense of each user ID name. I've had a lot of problems lately with getting scammed, and had to file many a report with e-bay, and I've had three people removed.

So if this "new bidder" really wanted these, why didn't he bid the next increment to become the high bidder???
it's obvious that his last bid is *less* than the 50 dollar increment.
So he stopped ONLY when the other bidders reserve was discovered.
Hmmmm....so he obviously KNOWS the ebay system.
And my point about additional ID's was that you DON'T have to use your own info if you use another persons email / isp / etc and do not register with paypal or get verified.
Again. ANYBODY can get an ID and bid with no restriction which makes the ebay experience somewhat sour.

Heather,
My point is directed at this comment. Driving up the bid to find out the reserve. Yes I understand shill bidding but that is not what I was talking about. I was talking about driving up the bid to find out the reserve then retracting. This type of action can be monitored. Also, as a seller I do not allow under 10 feedback to bid unless they contact me first. But I'm trying to keep things honest and get rid of the strokers.

Exactly - and you are an honest man and I meant no disrespect to you.
But not everyone operates on the up and up as you do. Any franchise "storefront" place has to make a certain minimum on every sale to pay the various fees. Doesn't matter if its Burgers or Pizzas or veterinarians. Gotta pay for that fee somehow. It would easier for that kind of outfit to keep bid on the high side if someone, a friend or ally, was pushing each bid to the edge.
Honestly - I wonder why anyone bids high prices so early in the game - thats in the sellers best interest! The real thrill is in the bidding blitzkrieg 90 seconds before the auction closes!

That's why we look out for each other in situations like this one. Just yesterday I busted a (Store Front/Pawn Shop) like this one for e-bay fee circumvention, and got his listing canceled. The one odd thing about the listing is that it was on U.S. soil. Usually those listing are out of the country trying to run various scams. Had fun doing that one.

All retail outlets are required to collect sales tax for items sold on location unless the purchaser provides an exemption form for that state or one that is accepted by that state.
And if you look close at bidder 3, he stops his every 10 second bidding sprees when he exposes the next bidders maximum and *never* exposed himself to a high bid. Not a rookie.
Stated clearly in the description:
All local pick-ups will be charged 6% Pennsylvania sales tax, regardless of State or Province of the purchaser

It's a way for ebay to cover up shill bidding, is all. They are all about the seller, very little attention is given to the buyer. Just try to get in contact with anybody at ebay. All you can talk to is an "eBay Community Expert" or some such nonsense. And they stand behind the sellers 100%!
EBay makes the most money off the final value of the item. They make money off the listing value, based on the starting price. They make money off of PayPal, which eBay owns. These people are really trying to put the squeeze on the consumer. BUYER BEWARE! That is the watchword on eBay these days.

The same guy who won these 4341's outbid me (and others) on a pair of 8" 112A's at $500+ about a year and a half ago. I would suggest that money was no issue on having these. If he's a forum member he's a quiet one.
For all of you who feel the 4341's are not worth this kind of money consider this - exact component package as the 4343, just not biampable. Slightly more compact cabinet than the 4343. Side by side in an A/B comparison I could hear no difference between the two. Obviously biamping the 4343 will yield better results over full passive.
4343's sell for $4000 ++ all day long and nobody thinks anything of it, but paying $2400 for 4341's is considered insane. Please SPLAIN this to me. I posted a fully restored pair of 4341's for sale on the forum some time back asking for a fair offer. Several members said they were worth $4k based on their rarity and condition. I was looking for 3K to recover my investment in buying and restoring them. They went to Aladambama in just a few hours for 3K.
Later regretting my decision to sell them I went on the hunt for another pair. Damn if a pair wasn't posted right on the forum market place just a few months ago with an asking price of $1800 ($2200 + bucks less than 4343's). For a few weeks after I bought them their ridiculous high price was still being kicked around on the forum. You know the routine "man I wish I would have seen those earlier - I would have bought them in a heartbeat". Or - "gee, they were only a few miles away, wish I would have seen them". They're sitting here now, condition an easy 9 out of 10, and for a lot less than people agree is a fair price for 4343's.
4340's/4341's are rare as hell, likely the rarest of all the 43XX series, don't sound too bad, and are the sleepers in the market for those looking for good value for their 43XX invested dollars. I'm not making any comparisons here between apples and crocodiles so please, lets not start making comparisons between the 4341 and Westlakes or 250Ti's.

And yes, that was one point to me, the slightly smaller boxes looked to have a bit more WAF.
I never even bid - it was out of my league by the time I would have started.

Hello Heather
I am in the same boat. That's why I built my 4344's. I could get the drivers as cores and recone over time so it wasn't all in one shot. You also end up with a fresher driver set as well. Those boxes are not cheap no matter how you do it. He got a nice deal but he may have 4 recones in the 15's and 10's to bring them back to life. You can try foam on the 15's but the 10's with the Lansaloy?? May need compression driver diaphrams as well so another $1200+ with those in the mix.

Despite all the shill bidding and other issues with the bidding- I can't believe anyone would complain about that price; It was an EXCELLENT deal! If anything else- they are worthy investments. I fully expected them to reach over $3.5K USD. This is the only pair I have ever seen up for sale. Americans are so fortunate about the great deals to be had, and yet so many complain about the price of everything great. I guess that explains why so much great JBL is taking a hike into other parts of the world so readily. Keep it coming. :)
It may be a loooong time before you see another pair, and it gives all the woulda/coulda/shoulda people something to regret. You can bet those people will bid to win next time.
I'm glad to see somebody took advantage of a good thing. Congrats to the winner- it was a steal! :applaud:
If the seller would have been willing to crate and ship- I might have paid that price on top of the winning bid just to be one of the few people in the world to say "I own a pair of these". That might have been a once-in-a-lifetime chance.

Fair market value is only one consideration, for myself it is the thrill of the auction, the adventure of retrieving them and the discovery of everything good and bad about a particular model and their condition. There is much novelty in every aspect of a new system and that is why more than anything else, I continually seek new projects.
I prefer vintage gear, not because new products are inferior, but simply because it gives me a way to interact, or perhaps in some cases to improve upon a less than ideal design or execution. Buying new products is a much less interesting ordeal, especially when considering whole systems.
Without the element of chance things would not be nearly as exciting, I was prepared to go $2800, plus tax for the 4341's. I honestly thought I would be outbid.
I was not concerned about shell bidding because I figured it would get flushed out when the cards hit the table and I believe I was right. Much remains to be seen about this new system, I am hopeful, as always, that they are in a condition, or a state of preservation that is in keeping with the $2600 investment, plus the time it will take to retrieve them. Of course there are no guarantees, but I can say over all, that I have always, at least broken even in the end when buying and selling on eBay. It is a wonderful hobby and one of the only hobbies I have enjoyed where I can actually make that statement.
I would like to point out that shortly before this auction went up a pair of JBL 4312 monitors sold for just under $1000! I know it's hard to believe. I have owned the model for mentioned and I can honestly say I would not pay $1000 to own them again, however I believe it is an indication of how undervalued these 4341's are in the marketplace right now. I would like to make clear that I did not buy these speakers to make money, but that does not necessarily mean that I want to lose it either!
I do not have deep pockets, I am not a speaker playboy, I give up many other luxuries and sometimes necessities to cough up this much money in such short notice. I'm hit tin the lint line on this purchase. I had to scramble to put together enough money to where I felt I could put in a reasonable bid, perhaps enough to take them home. Again, for me that's part of what makes it fun. Running around scrambling, begging, borrowing and stealing, before the auction deadline.
When I get these home, it may all be worth it, rest assured I will be happier than a 10-year-old kid unpacking his always wanted daisy BB gun on Christmas morning. That can be a hard feeling to find as an adult!
In conclusion, I would like to state that I perceive no malice or ill will on the part of any members that have written in this thread, please do not take personal offense to my introspective indulgence.
Most sincerely,

Oh well, too far away, and even if a local guy packed and shipped them I'd fear driver damage given the condition of the woofers.
Hey NewZenith, nice acquisition. I stick with my original statement; you'll have some sweet speakers when it's all said and done.
I'm kinda like you in the respect that if I want something, I'm just going to bite the bullet and do it. It's my money.
OTOH, I really, really, really like getting neat stuff cheap. Sadly, that's getting harder and harder to do.
I do have a reputation as a fan of the newer stuff. It's deserved. ;) There's nothing like being the first to open the box, pull the speaker out, unwrap it, and set it up for the first time.
Still I appreciate your approach, and I've been just as excited picking up a pair of ravaged XPL200s and bringing them back from the dead as I have been opening up that brand new PS1400 or PT800 from the Performance Series.
Good luck with your "new" speakers. :bouncy:
Awesome - one of our folks got them! Very very cool!
I was concerned that a flipper would get them -
sounds like you have a fine appreciation for such speakers.
Very well stated - enjoy!
And - please share the discovery with us when you get them home and get music into them!
Heather, half the guys on this forum are flippers, :(

I emailed the seller about this auction and it's interesting bidding and here was his reply:
"The bidder actually responded when we e-mailed him and asked him to call the store. He was from New York and said that he created the user name so that he could try and win the auction. He profusely thanked us for giving him the chance to call when I insisted that a second chance offer would be given right away if he wasn't planning on paying. I was reading the forum responses and I was upset to see all the accusations of shill bidding but I understand people's suspicions. I'm assuming that you're a member of that forum and I was wondering if you would let people know that if they ever suspect shill bidding - especially for one of our own items they can feel free to call us at 215-673-4063 or e-mail us at Philadelphia@imaginethissold.com and we will gladly direct them to our eBay" representative so that they can discuss our reputation with him."
BTW - the bidder 3's next target ( as bidder 2 ):

Sure - but he sounds like part of the other half ...;) As am I
And he SURE doesn't sound like the folks who buy them, piece them out and remove a complete, working system from our world.
Everytime you do that God kills a kitten ...

Hi Senorita,
I'm not sure if I understand the terms being used here, pardon my nationality. Does flipping mean parting out, or simply reselling them for profit (complete)?
If it wasn't for people parting out JBL speakers- you wouldn't have your new L200 cabs. :bouncy:
I have parted out JBL speakers in the past when the cabinets were especially rough, or something else was bad. I know for a fact- those parts helped restore other JBL speakers. It is often viewed as poor taste, but in some circumstances, it can be a good thing.
I wouldn't dream of parting out a rare pair of 4341's, and I don't think anyone here would do such a thing (I hope!). I might be inclined to resell them (flip?) for profit a few years down the road, and I hope the buyer does just that. They are investments...and great speakers!!
Cheers,
Nate. :)
PS. My god would never kill a kitten for such a minor offense. In fact, She gave them 9 lives! :D

I think of flippers as folks that buy something (JBLs, real estate, vintage cars, etc) with the sole intention of turning a quick profit. They don't buy it for the love of the music, they don't appreciate the turns of the wood, the grain, the sound of the straight 8 under the hood - for them its strictly a quick dollar resale thing. If the market moved from Lasnings to Advents or Klipsche, they'd just folla the dolla. ;)
I've got no problem with folks who buy it and sell it 6 months or a year or two later - thats a learning curve kind of thing. Listening tastes change - people change.
Parting out is parting out. Its why the Ti speakers all get gutted now - the drivers are rare and worth so much no one wants to ship the cabinets around.
I understand why I got the L200 cabinets - they are not new, nor are they perfect - one got dropped, or something and for a collector, they'll move their good parts along. Its why I got it so cheap. But for me, the rear panel damage is easily fixed and I can enjoy the sound - the small chipped veneer area doesn't concern me - I'm not a collector, I want to play them and thank the James B that they were out there!
besides - I'm just weird about these things:applaud:
And the kitten thing? I have two lovely Himilayans that I care for very much ...
it was a playful reference to a common internet image/joke, from some japanese Anime or TV show.
One of the cleaner variants of it is at http://www.walksf.org/images/rememberthekittens.jpg
And this is Teddy on the L200 - named because of his resemblence to Teddy Roosevelt (note the moustache)
