Are 4350 speakers THIS GREAT? That is getting into serious cash. For that amount of money you really have many choices. Why JBL?
Speaker design tends to be copy cat, so why don't I see any other company copy these large boxes, now? If the design is that good
would'nt they do so!!

How about these:

So my question is for the wonderful folks who have the large JBL's, what have you compared these speakers to? Any Side by Side comparisons?

I have some L-65's (which I really like) and L-5's, but I need some reasons
to even consider spending $8500 one day on any pair of speakers whether they are JBL or otherwise. :)

You might try arranging to hear a pair. That might be the best way to answer your question. There is a collector dimension to their market value as well.

I do not believe the buyer is a collector, I think these will be used in a studio.;)

Well, that is interesting. People equipping studios need the right tools, but I would guess there is also a customer relations aspect, and that can require spending boku bucks to satisfy. Also, I think two-channel recording these days emphasizes punishing bass and upper bass, and the 4350's might be chosen to show that is in the recording. In the context of equipping a professional studio $8500 is not large.

For studio use, a similar monitor using the best current drive units would be approaching $20K in drivers alone.

The Avant Garde is a different beast altogether. The 4350 has a distinctly hairy undercarriage whereas the Duo is neatly shaved.

When I was in college I worked for a friend's Dad in their auto parts house. It started as a Penn Jersey but grew to be so much more. I grew up around car buffs so I knew the lingo and fit right in. Anyway, one saturday a customer came in for some fuel line parts - I think his brother-in-law or something was fixing his car and had sent him for parts. Anyway, we wound up going round and round with him trying to gracefully explain the difference between male and female pipe fittings. He just didn't get it.

Nudge nudge, wink wink,

So back to the post :D

Has anyone owned a pair of these or any of the big
43xx series?

And compared them to other high quality speakers
Quads, Martin Logan, whatever?

If you have the taste for them, the space for them, and the money for them, they're hard to beat. Still, listening is a subjective art, and not everyone will be equally satisfied.

I think you need an animator to capture the swinging movement Scott.

43** swing - Logans image. If the JBL's are True Grit, the Logans are Brokeback Mountain. Horses for courses or something like that.
