What are the advantages of using a big driver in the mid bass region

Surface area. I think the larger drivers couple with the room better and sound more natural. JMHO

Well I think it's both. The larger area driver can typically move more air and couple with much less excursion for the same output. The larger driver doesn't have to work as hard and therefore stay's in it's linear range over a larger dynamic range. Perceptully I think that is why larger systems sound less congested and strained than smaller systems do at moderate to higher levels. I think that surface area is at least partially responsable for that. In my home set-ups I have one 12 and 2 15's all covering up to 300Hz where they pass off to a 6" and 10"s Midranges. Of the 3 systems the larger systems have the advantage in the midbass region.
