Gray paper cone on JBL 123A family is very rare. I'll say... Anybody know of these?

I could be wrong, he could be completely right... but that looks like possibly a Waldom recone kit in there. I've never seen gray aquaplas, period, on a woofer in any part of the time period 123As were made, L88 or afterwards...

Regards,
Gordon.

Thanks, Alex.

They are from the early L88 Nova's. My brother just got a pair off ebay. He has not received them as yet, but rear photo showed no aquaplas on back of cone.
If you enlage and lighten the pic, from this auction, it almost appears to be grey aquaplas on front of cone. We will know for sure when he gets them.

And another pair

Please do let us know how it turns out! My L88s were white-cone, and they were pretty early (probably 1968 or before)...

Gordon.

Maybe "gray primer" to cover some stains? Nice masking job! ;)

Bo..with a more critical look at the woofers you posted about, there is a big difference in color betwwwn the 2 different auction pictures but who can judge a digital pic on the web anyway. My Bro received his woofers today, though I probably won't see them before the weekend and he says there is no aquaplas, front or rear.
Gordon and Alex could be right and they are Waldon cones.
I think an e-mail to the seller might be in order.

Probably scratching through the inventory for a pair of those rare gray ones :rotfl:

All factory 123As should have Aquaplas, on the front of the cone. If it doesn't have it, it's definitely a non-factory recone... or at least, the WRONG cone assembly (ie, possibly a D123 cone?)...

Waldom is now Image Communications out of Chicago. Don't have their phone number, but you should be able to look them up... www.reconer.com, etc...

Gordon.

I don't think that's a D123 cone--too many pleats in the surround. The D123 surround is the same paper as the cone, rolled and treated with dope, and only has one forward ridge outward from the edge of the cone. Both my gray 16 ohm pair and the black 8 ohm pair are like that.

21005P on the back of the cone is the same identifier on a
123A-1 cone I have from an an L1OOA Century... the cone is white Aquaplas. :spin:
