I use a late 70's Advent 300 receiver for the preamp; CD player is a Yamaha CDX-396 (single disk player & amazing sound quality for the price); an Alesis Matica 500 Professional dual-channel power amp (IMHO probably the best sounding amp I've heard); A Denon AVR-85 HT receiver for AM & FM tuner; and a pair of JBL 4410 Monitors (with the 035TiA tweeters replaced with 2404 "baby cheeks"). The system is currently set up in a small RV, so the 2235 based subs are not used. This basically gives a "nearfield/midfield" enviornment, which the 4410's seem to excel in (incredible soundstage & imaging and very dynamic response, which the system could never achieve when used in a larger room).
On the Chesky CD "Classics & Jazz " CD the demo track featuring a tom-tom drum being struck while circling an omnidirectional microphone, the 360 degree rotation is produced with about 320 degrees of rotation...again, uncanny imaging which surprised even this grizzled, jaded listener. On my set of first generation Beatles CD's (not listed as remastered, and with minimal digital editing or "cleanup"done), every edit, punch-in, gain riding event etc. etc (MANY, MANY) are very audible in the mix. This system as setup reminds me very much of sitting before a pair of 4310's while working at Schaffer Electronics Corp., ("THE" broadcast automation outfit) in the 70's, with source material from Scully, Ampex, ITC & Studer 1/2 track tape decks @ 30 IPS (but NOT quite). Of course, though, it is an ever-evolving system (where is that grail?".

I dont mix my stereo with HT. . .I have my "Big System" for movies and in my 9x9 office I have a MINT pair of JBL L-112s driven by a "Enhanced" Forte' Model Three controled by a Sony TA-E77ESD PreAmp and its wonderful. . . .
I dont mind talking about this system. This started with a little Model 26 Marantz and a pair of PSB Alpha AVs just for some music in my office. . .Now I have moved considerably up from there. IMO. . .Although I do miss that old Marantz. . . .
BTW I am the bald headed one in my Avatar. . .Really thats my new Grandson!!! I like to talk about him too!

I mean he still has much to learn. . . . LaGrange on those L-112s at a decent volume does tend to stop you in your tracks. for a moment anyway. . .

Ian and Earl -
Welp, I must say that the D1 was probably the best sounding DAC I'd ever owned or heard to date. And I'm serious.
Previously, I'd owned the Theta Data Pro Basic II with mods, Krell SBP-64X, a few Audio Alchemy's w.outboard PS's & jitter boxes, a couple of Audio Research's DAC's/CDP's, Wadia 860, Denon, Rotel, SonyES, Genesis Digital Lens jitter filter and a bunch of digital I can't remember right now. The Pass whupped all of 'em. :montyp:
The Pass had just about everything sound-wise you could ask for IMHO, so I won't go into all of the superlatives unless someone wants to know specifically. Probably the best thing was that it was actually listenable for long sessions with no loss of detail, (which is where most Redbook front-end's fail).
A lot of that had to do with the excellent C.E.C. transport feeding it, and I didn't get quite the beauty out of the TL-1X/D1 combo until I linked them with the fiber optic cable. The D1 had the best F.O. receiver in the biz at that time from what I understand, and it still probably is the best. That's I believe what made the difference. I had tried all manner of RCA & balanced digital cables previously, but the AT&T link was just spectacular.
(BTW - I believe the TL-1X/D1/AT&T link was the same digital front-end that Wayne Colburn of Pass Labs had as his reference system. I was informed of that after I already owned the D1, while speaking with Wayne one day about a Pass preamp. Nice coincidence. Maybe his ears and mine are similar?! :hmm: )
Ian -
Don't you have one of the Pass DIY amps? Which one, the Bride of Zen or Daughter, etc? I've heard they're supposed to be excellent, and I've always wanted to hear a properly built one. Maybe I'll start to look into those - any hints?

Hey Wards -
Are those ML's CLS IIa's or IIz's? I had a pair of IIa's in walnut, and intended to do the z impedance mod but never got around to it.
If you get the chance some day, listen to any of the ARC Classic-series amps through the CLS'. I used to power mine with a pair of Classic 120 monoblocks with KT-88's, and it was "hog heaven"!! I'd say that rig was one of the best speaker/amp combo's I've ever heard.
Only problem was, I kept blowing those '88's prematurely. Between the Chinese-made tubes I had at the time, and the .5 ohm impedance of the CLS' in the 20kHz octave, it was no wonder. Those '88's just liked to oscillate heavily with the nearly DC impedance up there. Or overheat/arc. Or both!!
Then, I traded the 120's for a Krell KSA-150. Had that driving the ML's for awhile, then traded off those for Apogee Stage's...then Maggie 2.6R's...then...
Does the torture ever stop with this hobby?! :biting:

Yep,
House of Pass , Built:
BOSOZ balanced line stage
Pearl Jfet Phono stage
Aleph 3, 5, & 2 mono block
In progress AX 100+100 and discrete Jfet follower active crossover, the former creams the ML with massive dynamic contrast and purity using only 2 stages IMHO.
On the drawing board a X Pre amp and X Series 600 to drive the 4345 bass and also for summer listening (600+600 A/B watts class only to 100 watts)
Not difficult Send me a pm for details,
Also great people like Karen (do a search for the pic, its worth it) to deal with and plenty of punters at diyaudio.com (sorry she's married boys)

Instead of making excuses here 'tis:
Small system is Pioneer SX-60 stereo receiver front end (bad amp section) driving a 1970s vintage Leach 90WPC stereo power amp (scratch built by my brother Don from Audio Magazine article plans) connected to a pair of KLH Model 5s with replacement 4" Goldwood cone tweeters from Parts Express on home brew rubberized damping rings made from scrap aluminum siding.
"Big" (?) system is Gemini PMX120 stereo DJ mixer into a Behringer GEQ3102 stereo 1/3 octave EQ into DBX 223 stereo electronic X'over. The DBX summed mono LF output drives a bridged Crown DC300A connected to a Behringer B1800X 18" subwoofer. The DBX stereo high outputs drive another Leach 90WPC stereo power amp connected to (here's my JBL props) a pair of JBL era Urei 809As.
For sources I use a variety of CD players and turntables and, yes, I'll play DJ at friends parties if they ask me to.

Hey Rhino, how do you like the S22 compared to the L300!?
Rhino
01-28-2004, 06:14 PM
Personally I would think the S-22's are more sonically correct than the L-300's and they appear to be just slightly more efficient. It seems to me that the 300's have just a bit better low end, though in the present set up with the 18" Velodynes handling the lowest of the lows, it is hard to tell. I have never heard nor seen another set of S-22's. Are you familiar with them? I have some literature from JBL that describes then as quite possibly the finest combination of JBL loudspeaker components and enclosures ever created. I play both sets of JBL's together most of the time as I am somewhat of a novice but an admitted SPL nut. Does any of this make sense with your (and any other member's) experience with this rare model of JBL? I get plenty of volume (perhaps not enough) out of my present set up, however, the room I am currently using this system in is almost 1500 s.f.
Any info/advice you have on this topic would be greatly appreciated as well as any leads on a pair of 4355's. I heard a pair of these when I was very young and would love to own a set someday.
Thanks,
Rhino

That is the 376 right?
The S300-1 system which consisted of the 136H, LE85, HL92, 077, LX300 went for $915 each back in 1980. (Shipping weight was 52 lbs.) Basically your standard 4333B/L300A system.
The S22-1 system which consisted of the 136H, 376, HL93, 077, LX80A, N7000 went for $1190 each back in 1980. (Shipping weight was 63 lbs.)
The EN5C enclosure added $250 to each set of components. (Shipping weight was 78 lbs.)
You can build your own 4350B's by finding another pair of 136H's and adding a pair of 2202H's along with the necessary network change.
Rhino
01-29-2004, 07:15 AM
Yes, you have all of the components right.
Those are indeed the original 376 drivers.
Thank you very much for all your great info.
I may need to ask your advice again in the future.
If you know of anyone who would be interested
in either the L-300's or the S-22's (or both)
please send them in my direction.

Different tuning options. The EN3, EN5 and EN8 enclosures were designed to accomodate numerous LCS systems.
For the S22 the short port should probably be blocked and the long port should probably be open. I think the long port is the same length as the L300 port but I could be wrong.

If You are using a UPS, most probably it has a switching output with some sort of modified square wave; Not kind to amp power supplies, You can check the waveform with a 'scope.

If I run the unit without the batteries it should be just conditioning, or I can still use the HUGE transformer to filter the bad. Do you think that is a problem? Your input is very welcome!:smthsail:

It depends on Yr UPS, try a scope with at least 380V probes, disconnecting it from the wall, to check the waveform; Unless it is pretty sophisticated, when the line voltage is OK, it just runs direct from the wall, and uses the transformer to charge the batteries, if it is a common one, when the line drops, it switches to battery power, usually using a simple oscillator, which might produce square or modified square wave, computers do not mind, as they transform it in turn to 5, 9V semi DC, which is fine for digital circuits but not for amps; in short, use the 'scope.

hi all,
i think am very lucky to have the system i have. i found the cabinets at a local music hall and saved them from further misuse by buying them and putting them in my living room. originally the 2" drivers were mounted in the LF horn throat with H5041 90 degree horns, but i eventually pulled them out and mounted 2397's. i added the 2405's to extend the HF response. they are added in around 14kHz with a simple first order capacitor filter.
LOW: C-40 Harkness cabinets loaded with 150-4C drivers
MID: 375 with 2397 horn - 1 original 375 diaphragm and sadly 1 needed replacement - replaced with a new D16R2440.
HIGH: 2405 (alnico).
crossover - N400
power amps - 1950's Ampex professional 6v6 monoblocks.
i mostly listen to LP's or my own original digital recordings. i am a producer/engineer by trade and i also do audio mastering.
Really nice marc. Welcome to JBL heaven!

Hi WHEJ4312
Is that a Marantz 500 power amp you have? If it is, it's a valuable amp. There were not to many 500's produced before Marantz began production of the 500M series.

Hi whej4312
I bought my Marantz 300DC in 1978 when the 510M was available. Your 500 my go back to 1973/74. Anyway, you can check its value at classic-audio.com. Enjoy
P.S. Don't sell it!

I bought a brand new Marantz 510 (without meters) as a close out for $430 in 1978. I also picked up a 3800 preamp. I never cared for the preamp, but that was a fine amp! It is one of those, I should have kept it pieces. A couple of years ago I had an opportunity to buy a 500 for cheap. It worked well, but was cosmetically less than perfect. I also thought the loudspeaker connections on the front of the amp were a bit awkward.
I assume the 500 is a bass brute. Do you use it for full bandwidth?

My experience with the 500 has been an awkward one. First,it is a '74 vintage and factory stock. It was a little on the edgey side with a huge bass hump at about 60-70 hz originally. Great for slow poke speakers. The mod that was done, brought out the "Soul of Saul" so to speak. Speed, depth, and an f****** midrange people with Louther horns or 801's would kill for. The 'ol girl is fickle on occasion and sometimes the left meter sticks, but when she's right, mamasita, she cooks. I use the back speaker output's, so I can leave the rare center cover in place. makes her look prettier in all silver and blue. If you want to hear JBL's the way they were intended, the 500 is the one, except save an ML30, or a Coda 100. My friend's Krell has some serious ponies, and a bottom end punch that will make a 2245 humble or you sterile, but that's another story!! I had a pair of beloved L112's years ago( should've never sold them) and that my friends was a combo to die for.... I miss those days so very much.....

Hello all and Happy Holidays! In the system I keep in the living room. I have a set of JBL 250Ti's in the Teak veneer finish. They are powered by a McIntosh MC 352 that is connected to a McIntosh C2200 tube preamp along with a McIntosh MCD 205 CD player and a McIntosh MR-85 Tuner. The home theater also is all McIntosh with JBL SVA 1600 up front left and right with the SVA center speaker. In the rears I am using Klipsch because of the horns. JBL just doesn't make anything that hangs on the wall that is at the same level as the SVA's. Cheers, Frank

Aloha
Just redid the living room, moved out the Xmas tree and put in a new sofa and love seat...so.....I had to move the JBL 4343's...
I have my living room set up for both HT and stereo..
On the floor laying on their sides are a pair of 4343's for left and right for either stereo or HT, 2405's were turned when I got them, so they actually sound better this way until I set them up correctly and redo the cabs and make a grill cover for them.
On top of the 4343's are a pair of Altec Valencia's with 515B's instead of the 416z's redid at 8 ohms.
For center speaker that the TV sits on...an home built of solid black walnut cabinet from 1957 from Altec plans with 811 horn, 802C driver and 416 woofer.
For sub... Contra Bass.
Receiver, Yamaha R-V1105
dvd player Pioneer DV-333
Amp for 4343's, Altec 9440A
Amp for Contra Bass, Altec 9440A
Kitchen... sitting on top of cabinets facing sink area...pair of JBL L65's
Rear speakers for HT...Tannoy C6....modified
Attic...piles of goodies for future plans...
2-411-8A NIB..... I know they need new surrounds.
Lots of 416's ..... Altec and Heathkit logo's
811 and 511 horns and numerous small format drivers
Some JBL and Altec componet speakers, tweeters and misc. goodies, cabs etc. 2nd pair of L65's.
On the mainland @ mom's..in storage, A7/500 original plywood cabs.
In her living room...pair of Santiago's
At a friends house on loan... pair of Barcelona's with original black surrounds that need to be changed.
Now how to figure out how to put a 70mm screen in the living...I'd be happy.... well for maybe a month or so.....

Sinon, as tu essayé d'autres gros monitors jbl ? J'ai recupéré des 4333 depuis, seule la trompe et lentille ne sont pas d'origine. Dans quelle region es tu ? Remplis ton profil.

Except for the L100 Century speakers, none of my JBLs are "classic" in the sense that most of the hard core JBL fans here desire. However, you'll see a cross-section of fine JBL products that don't enjoy the cachet of the more highly regarded speakers. My JBLs form an interesting counterpoint to the speakers most often talked about here, and I think they represent some of the high points of JBL's overlooked engineering and design.
In my home, I subscribe to a JBL-modified version of England’s imperative for Global Empire: JBL Everywhere!

I'm a new member who's moved into a fixer-upper house. Luckily, my wife let me put the two channel stereo in our bedroom (without the subs) until I get the basement finished. Nothing fancy, but here's everything I own in no particular order:
Speakers:
Legacy Focus Speakers, Main
Legacy Silver Screen, Center
Legacy MIST, Surround
JBL Control 1, Garage
JBL Control 1, Kitchen
JBL 240Ti, Presently in process of being sold http://audioheritage.org/vbulletin/images/smilies/frown.gif
(2) JBL 2245H Subs, each in a 12 cubic foot box, tuned to 22Hz per Audio magazine article by Lorr Kramer and Greg Timbers. I wish to build two more for a total of four. Yes, I'm nuts!
Large Advents, Vinyl Cabinets
Audio Control Richter Scale III Crossover, 40Hz
Adcom GTP-760 Pre/Pro
Adcom GFP-555 Pre, Second System Not Set Up
Adcom GFA-565 Monoblocks (4) biamping FOCUS
Adcom GFA-555 II (2) bridged mono for Subs
Adcom GFA-545, Center Channel
Adcom GFA-535, Surrounds
Adcom GFA-535, Second System Not Set Up
Marantz 2235B Receiver, Kitchen
Pioneer SX-950 Receiver, Garage
Rotel RCD-855 CD Player (yes, it's old)
Philips CD Recorder
Philips DVD Player
RCA DTC-100 HDTV Receiver
Marantz 110 Tuner, Second System Not Set Up
Denon Cassette Deck. I miss my old TEAC A-150!
Basically, only the FOCUS, one pair of GFA-565's, the GTP-760, and the Rotel CD player (just used as a transport) is set up in the bedroom along with 8 DIY 16" x 48" tube traps. Once I get the basement finished, the 2245H's with their cabinets will be flush mounted in the wall. I hope to get a decent projector, a nice turntable (Rega P3?) and maybe a Crown K2 for the subs. The K2 has an incredible damping factor and no fan, so I think it may smoke the GFA-555's that I was using on them before moving.
Believe it or not, when I purchased the 240Ti's new in 1987, my wife tried to convince me to spring for the 250Ti's, but I thought the ~$3,500 was too much at the time. I've kicked myself ever since!!! Had I bought them, I'd still have them and wouldn't have had to spring for the FOCUS. That would have saved me enough to by another 8 2245H's http://audioheritage.org/vbulletin/images/smilies/wink.gif .
Here's some info on me: http://www.vollmerrocks.com/ I'm the bald guy hiding behind the 28" bass drum.

Cool site, Steve. That you, the kid with the drums 30 years ago there on the Pics page?
Surely SOMETHING other than the 240ti's can go. Advents maybe? Heh, heh.... :p

Yep, that's me 20 some years ago (not 30!!http://audioheritage.org/vbulletin/images/smilies/smile.gif ). But there's pictures of me now there too. I'm 41, still ROCK and still love JBL stuff. Unfortunately, I've bought this fixer upper house and don't have much room. I'm happy that a true JBL nut has bought the 240Ti's instead of me having them stored without them being used. My number one concern was ensuring they went to someone who would appreciate them like me. I think I've found that person, so I'm happy that my "kids" will have a nice new home.
This site is really cool. Thanks for letting me participate.

Hi,
I was thinking to sell the following loudspeaker: Karlson enclosure with Fostex 15inch, Altec 811B/806A with N800D and Fostex FT 17 H for frequence above 15khz. Plus additional crossover to flat down the 1,5-3 khz peak of the 811B.
I get the enclosure from a closed movie theatre.
Then I connect the speaker once more and put a LP of Led Zeppelin. NOW I know what was missing on the Model 19: Impact. What a delivery of emotions and pleasure!
There is no way to sell something like that!

I've been one of the UK's devotees of the old JBL sound since I worked in the US about 40 years ago. There I had a pair of S-somethings with a 15" woofer and a horn. Absolutely awesome sound. I sold them before I returned to the UK..big mistake.
I presently have a pair of L150A ( bought in 1986) with a Sumo Polaris amplifier and Athena pre-amp with Mission Cyrus FM Tuner and CD player. About 2 years ago I had to replace the surrounds to the 12" drivers and the 12" PR ( at huge cost but what else could I do? Mrs.Barron says she'll bury me in the boxes and sell the units). The mid-range and tweeters seem to go on forever. While I was there, I applied thick bitumen pads to the majority of the interior of the cabinets...made them sound a lot faster. I'd already scrapped the level controls...they'd become very noisy.
But I have succumbed to the pleasures of the DVD, and have now installed my entire system, now PC based, into a rather nice piece of furniture from your US manufacturer 'Ethan Allen' ( in the British Traditional style...in harmony with our own furniture). You just can't get such quality from UK manufacturers.
The downside is that the speakers are up against the walls...and they've lost some of that slam and image depth that I enjoyed so much when they were in the middle of a long room. One can twiddle with the PC equaliser...but it's just not the same.

Four JBL 4311 studio monitors.
Four 7' tall Altec Lansing 210 Voice of the Theatre cabinets w/ wings. Got four A4's or two A2's depending on how you bolt them together.
Sold the eight original 60 watt Altec 515B's and eight 400 watt JBL 2225's are
going in their place. Gonna go w/ the big 2360a or 2365a JBL horns and not sure which comp. drivers. 2445/6's ? 2441's ?? If I can afford them.......... maybe TAD. And a pair of 2405 slots for way up high.
One Rane AC23 three way stereo / five way mono electronic x-over.
One 430 w/ ch. (into 4 ohms) Adcom amp.
One 50 w/ ch. (into 8 ohms) Alesis amp.
One 10 band / ch. eq. (+/- 15db)
One SAE parametric eq.
One Sony 100 w/ ch. receiver
One Nakamichi cassette deck
One X-Box
One Panasonic AG1950 hi-fi VCR w/ remote editing system
Need one 12 or 16 ch. rack mount mixer + 1 more amp.
Springtime projects include laying down some type of nice woodgrain veneer (on the horn part only) of the big 210 cabinets. Think it will look cool.....

I'm a DIY audio enthusiast seeking for common interest member.
ec1288 website publishes DIY HiFi Audio articles for the interests of the DIY audio enthusiast. Most of my projects are targetted on hard to find or expensive hi-end stuff. Reason being they are no longer in production or too costly to own them. If you really want to own them at a fraction of their retail price, you have to DIY.
Take at look at :- http://www.geocities.com/ec1288/
My systems are built from my DIY projects include Audio Note Ongaku amplifier, Pass Labs Aleph 5 amplifier, Altec Lansing A5 VOTT loudspeaker and Genesis ribbon and NHT 1259 loudspeaker.

I have a old turntable Micro-seiki RX-1500 with complete set-ut, mass motor , vacuum plate, base with choke air feets. The weight is 325 Lbs. The arm is Moerch DP 6 With vertical ajustment... The cartridge is Van den Hull Colibri
The preamp and amp is Accuphase E-306 with phono stage , ( My last big krell amp, preamp and separate reference phono stage is complete ridiculized by this small integrate!!!) $#%%?&?& What a money in garbage.
The interconnect is the referrence Van den hul silver IT lf half meter.
The cable speaker is SCSI 2 of van den hull.
I have a Accuphase power AC conditionner (astronomical price but just the best.)
My CD is the SCD -1 of Sony (sacd) with interconnect VDH Silver balanced..
my familly room is 12 X 26 feets, and the front wall is treated by RPG diffractal...
After 20 years and hundred experiences in many way, after a tousand reading magasine expert, I'm buidt a very strong frustration on voodu expertise, stupid remark and insanity commentary of reports is foward more to buy and buy an buy again... I decide to go in source and read a scientific university information, ISO, AnSI, norme, and instrumentals mesure material. In this quest, I found a Bruel & Kjaer !!! ALL my money is go in this way for couple of years but WOW The top of the world system analyse... So I read for acoustic romm equalization, and vibration problem, in architecture and electronic material, modal, mode dispersion , etc, etc... Of course my experience in Audiophile coupled by instrumental method and expertise Is permit to put a real responses on many problematic reproduction sound... and put a degree of problem by other... (So this is reason of my nameForum).
" the true exist!! search with appropriate tool, you go more close "
But I'M back to descrition system for conclusion !!
my Speaker (after my REGA, after Dynaudio Compound 4 is A fantastical L-300 mounted in gibraltar stand ( 450 Lbs of quarzt sand inside a big wood stand and granit slab on the sit on sand.) Unfortunately this speaker is as my friend. But is create my great love for JBL... So after scan around I finnaly buy a pair of 4343 rougly treament.
The speaker is originally in studio Moronight in Quebec. After, is go in barLounge and fixed in wall by side with big iron stand and big hole is side of speaker... recone with third part the speaker is finnally storage in garage for more 2 year.
I reconditionning the body, sand and put a new film of wood, recone the 15 and 10 driver, clean all contact and Lpad, and adapt a big connector for my cable. And put a feets for more convenience...
just love ....
I hope I contribute a little bit to give my passion of great big monitor studio JBL " the real stuff " less cosmetical presentation on this mode of life style, but better real sound of any smoke and mirror products...
