Surround material 2121?

Did the 2121 had a surround material made of paper (or similar) in form of a roll (same form than the foam surrounds) or was it a foam surround?

4343 owners could you please check for me?

2121 and 2122 are single roll **FOAM** like the 2235H.

The 2123 has double roll cloth like the 2225H

I have seen a few real old 2123's that have triple roll like the D/K/E 110

I have a couple of photo's I will post. I have one with foam and a older unit with what looks like the Lansaloy/Yellow surround but the close-up almost looks like it's cloth?? Are those some variation of LE-10's and not 2121's???

This damned 2121 seems to be a real mystery.

I was offered 2 2121 with "paper" surrounds. Seems that these guy meant the "cloth" surrounds. As they come out of very old 4341 this is possible.
But who can be shure?

I have held nearly every combination of JBL cone in my hand - what I've noticed is that the original white foam surrounds tend to yellow with age and become brittle. This is why there are 2 colors.

I have never seen a single roll **cloth** surround on any jbl cone from any era.

Some intrepid reconners in the 70's used to take a cloth 10" surround ( from old pioneers ?? ) and replace with them because jbl didn't sell the foam surrounds seperately and STILL does not.

If ANYBODY tells you that the surrounds are jbl replacements they are lying. Ask ANY **real** jbl service station ( even the ones who make these claims ) for the part number...

ANY pure paper surround is an aftermarket guitar cone - the only JBL's that had treated paper were the ancient D series, K151 and lotsa old pro+consumer tweeters.

I have a pair of 2121, 2122, 2123 and 2012 here in the shop. When it goes above ZERO ( that's -28 for you metric types ) I will take a family picture and post it here.

Perfect time for reconing and refoaming jobs. Of course in the warmth of the workshop with nice JBL behind you making inspiring sound:)
