I remember actually seeing those for sale in electronics catalogs of the day, (Allied?).

I remember Allied here in Chicago, you could get any kind of wire or cable or clip and even had tons of replacement loose speakers. I wonder if there still around?

No, Allied Electronics got eaten by Radio Shack years ago ... (but you can view the 1966 catalog here) (http://www.qsl.net/wa7zcz/disc.html)

Heathkit (http://www.heathkit-museum.com/) and Lafayette Radio went away as well ...

cool link thanks> I remember I tried to build a Heathkit color tv, it was a disaster. It was my first attempt to build something and was my last for a good long time.

That was for a short while. They are a fairly major industrial electric/ electronics supplier today. Radio Shack doesn't really resemble what it once was either. (pre-Tandy) Heath actually belonged to Schlumberger during their trip to nonexistence. If my French spelling is wrong it's because Google spellcheck punted.
