Vmax,
I have two Nakamichi Power amps for sale. One is a PA-5 Nelson Pass Threshold design 100 watts into 8 ohms, 150 dynamic output. I also have a MINT and I mean MINT PA-7AII. Condition 9.5 to a 9.75, 10 being the best it looks new. Unit comes with both factory boxes, and copy of owners manual. Retail in 1989 was $2500.00 I need $1900.00 for it shipping and insurance free.(pics on request) The PA-5 has no factory boxes but it will be packed for safe shipping. I have a no pay on this one it was listed one e-bay, and payment is past due. $544.95 on this one.

I didn't know Nakamichi was made by Mcintosh. I thought Mcintosh was made in New York and Nakamichi in Japan. I thought Mcintosh didn't have any oversea affiliates before Clarion. How long has that been going on?

He is also loooooking for Threshold designed power amps. Look at his question???????????
Nelson Pass designed the Nakamichi PA series amps, after his Threshod design........... Thought they might be of interest since they will give any Mac a run for the money in the same power class.

Well just excuse me for not being an indiscriminate know it all like you. I humbly ask a serious question and you bitch slap me for it. The author replied with a pleasant clarification of my question. Your comment was neither needed nor appropriate. What is your problem?

No offense, but why not just buy a Threshold? It would be cheaper.
Being the proud owner of a Nakamichi PA-7, which I reluctantly paid $750 for, I can see no reason why anyone should spend $1900 for a Nakamichi amp when a Threshold can be bought for half what you are asking...

BTW, I should have noted, that while I disagree with spending $1900 for a Nakamichi, I can't imagine finding a better amp for the money to power a set of L300/4333's.

Nightbrace,
No offense taken. This is not a PA-7 it is a PA-7AII, second gen. highly sought after, much more than the first gen PA-7. The price equals the condition of the amp. This is what I get for them in this condition all day long. The last one I sold in this condition with no factory boxes I got $1900.00 for it and I had another with a few more minor cosmetic blems I got $1500.00 for it. I deal in these amps quite a bit and this is the going market for them when they are mint.
Just sold a PA-5AII new in the box for $1050.00 it was a thing of beauty!!!!!!!! Also depending on which Threshold amp you are looking at and its condition they can run more than these. Hope this helps.

Thats crazy money to me.. How much better will the "second gen." sound and is it worth that much more? Couldn't your money be better spent on buying better speakers? It might be smarter to sell it on Ebay, then offer it to someone seeking a McIntosh amp. I think you and I both know that its just not worth spending that much on that amp, even if you can get that much for it.
BTW<< $750 is the MOST I've EVER spent on an amp, but it worked better than anything I tried with my L300's. You need not need BIG money to get BIG sound... My fav. amp with my Altec 19's cost less than $400, not because its the best amp ever made, but sounded the best with the speakers in my room.

No, he is looking to buy a Macintosh amp.
He is also looking for (Nakamichi) Threshold series.
Google is your friend - see - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nakamichi
Stasis Series Amplifiers
Nakamichi licensed "Stasis" technology from powerhouse amplifier manufacturer Threshold (a class A amplifier (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Class_A_amplifier) circuit by Nelson Pass, then a designer at Threshold (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Threshold), now at Pass Labs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pass_Labs)). This circuit was used in a line of expensive Nakamichi PA series of power-amplifiers, such as the PA-5 and PA-7, as well as their SR and TA series of receivers.

Good talking to you. I ventured off into nap land. The differences between the two amps is great, as far as build quality and sound goes. I have bought and sold over 20 PA-7's in the past two years. I probably am the biggest seller of the gear on the net. The average I get for PA-7's is between $700.00 and $1300.00 depending on condition. The second gen. amps always bring much more. The brand has a serious cult following like JBL. I will talk more later I'm headed out for dinner.

Well I was perfectly happy with my PA-7, I'm not sure how I could get the sound to be any better. I replaced my Crown amp with it, which I thought wouldn't move for a million years.

McIntosh is owned by a Japanese Corporation.....Clarion, I think, but not sure. This happened a few years ago. Perhaps Clarion owns Nakamichi, as well, therefore the confusion, perhaps....just food for thought.
As someone who once owned a 2105 I'm not sure if I think they are safe. One day a pair of my speaker wires became shorted (twisted together). One channel was quite distorted and ever so often the amp would turn off. Turns out being shorted made that speaker barely play and when the mac would get too hot from driving the short it would turnoff and cool down. Seams to me it could have started a fire. Any decent amp would have just blown up and there would have been no danger. Just a thought.

(No, actually it would have lit the hell out of the IOC lamps and activated it's protection circuitry.)

Nightbrace,
Here is some more info on the second gen amps for you to read. If we lived closer I would be glad to come over and drink a brewski so you could A/B the two. Once you've tasted the second gen it's hard to go back to first gen Nak amps. I bet your L-300's love that PA-7 your running them with.

I saw from other posts the McIntosh Laboratory, Inc. offers good amps.

Mcintosh Amps have a great Product old or new. I like the sound of the older ones such as the 2255s or the 2205s. The resale value on the Mcintosh amps are always seem to appreciate on the older ones. Just make sure that the owner took care of them and babied them and you'll always get your money back. Another nice thing is that you can still get a parts for them even 30 years after production.
