It's done! And, it needs a permanent good home!

Magnavox 8802-00 Tube Power Amplifier (Circa 1959-1961)

Tube Complement: 2- 6EU7 input/phase inverter tubes, 4- 6V6GT output
tubes, 1 6CA4 rectifier tube.

Circuit type: Grounded-Cathode input gain and inverter stages, push-pull
cathode bias output stages.

Power output: 12.5 watts per channel nominal.

Acceptable speaker load: 4- 16 ohms per channel.

This amplifier has been upgraded with all parts necessary to insure safe,
stable, reliable high-fidelity operation. All capacitors have been replaced
or bypassed with modern film caps, and all circuit parameters have been
checked (and adjusted if needed) to insure operation to original specs or
better performance. This amplifier should easily out-perform one in original,
stock condition, due to minor circuit enhancements.

Looks like a nice unit and you arent making much $ on it other than to recoup labor. Too bad I dont need one. Nice work, Gordon.

Tempting, those are very underrated amps, and VERY well made. Was this amp sold under the Magnavox name or sold through Jensen built by Magnavox? In the early 60's Jensen sold similiar amps made by Magnavox, this would give us an idea if its pre-1960 or post 1960. As this amp could have been sold by either company, although they were all built by Magnavox. So someone interested in a Jensen amp could assume that this one would be similiar. How do all the tubes test out?

Amp's definitely Magnavox brand... came from what was a very nice cherry-wood Magnavox console. The preamp/tuner and turntable weren't salvageable (missing and broken parts), so the amp was removed and set up to run independently.

Given its use of 6V6 tubes, I can place this amp as being 1961 or before... after that, they generally only used 6BQ5 output tubes. Definitely pre-'64, as most everything Magnavox after that point was solid-state ("Astro-Sonic").

All tubes test great (100% on a Sencore Mighty-Mite)- the only tube that was marginal was the rectifier, and it was replaced by a NOS West-German built (ICC branded, probably Siemens) 6CA4. Once that was done, all the tubes are now full-strength.

One remarkable thing about this amp is its LACK of background noise. It's uncanny. Put your ear right up next to the tweeter on an efficient (93 dB sensitivity) speaker, and you hear NO hiss or hum, WHATSOEVER. Should be well suited for horns or other high-efficiency speaker systems.

Also, the speaker systems used, by Magnavox, with these amps, were either 4 or 8 ohms; they have no problem running 4 ohm loads...

Gordon.

Thanks for such a COMPLETE response. These are stellar amps, how neat would it have been to have the complete set-up in the original cabinet, that must have been something. The reason why I ask if you thought if it was Jensen is to get an idea of the age, as both Jensen and Magnavox could have sold this same amp, but Jensen didn't start till a bit later (using the Magavox components). The fact that you pulled it from a Magnavox console confirms this, its definitely pre-1961..

Don't let the age fool ya. These are extremely well built and very heavy duty, especially with all the "new" components. Which I must say were very tastefully picked out as to preserve its original sound while making it MUCH more reliable. I have used the 6V6 output tubes with VOTT Altec's with great success.. And like the idea of using this amp to power a set of efficient compression drivers with horns. I used this amp below to power the horns and the woofers in a Bi-amp set-up.. Its modest 12 watt a channel power rating was more than adequte to power the Altec's.

IThis 162BA acutally is a 4-channel amp. 2-channels producing full range (12 watts RMS @ Ohm) and 2-channels for the highs (6 watts RMS @ 8 Ohm), and it too uses the 6V6 output tubes. Regrettably I sold both the speakers and this amp to a vintage Altec collector.. He's using them for his Home Theater set-up as we speak :). I had no complaints with the bass response either, but like I said my 4-channel amp was actually both a 12 watt and a 6 watt amp combined.. And worked perfectly for this sorta thing. I know a friend selling a comparable amp with 6V6 tubes as well, its a 185AA.

I preferred the sound of my HH Scott with the 7591 output tubes with my Altec 19's so I sold them, but I sometimes I wish I hadn't, the sound was nothing short of remarkable.

This amp is taylor made for Altec horn's, don't let it get away.. Would be unreal in a bi-amp set-up with a amp like the one I mentioned above for the woofers. if its here a month from now, I'll be a buyin', don't let that happen :).
