Maybe you could trade for some of that old JBL stuff you have ;)
I couldn't resist and I am not starting anything, I have never heard an altec so I don't really know, I only have older JBL stuff,

"What's that mean "The pro crossovers?""
Altec made pro line crossovers that were virtually identical to the Nineteen crossover, models 1201 or 1209 or something.
They're in the catalogs in this site's library.

Why move backwards?
D'OH! Now I have really started something
Just kidding. I have heard several Altec systems and I am even the proud owner of a nice set of Santana's right now. Some of the big older Altec sounds great. I just prefer my JBL stuff. Thats why I own it.

No, I got them from a guy in phily,
a rich man who was good friends with the owner
of the eagles football team. He was moving up to
some VERY $$ speakers. he never told me who made them. these speakers have a huge sound and work
very well with tube amps.
how else can I help you?

Interesting! No they are not original cabinets at all but look to be nicely done. Think he moved the woofer hight up a bit??
1209 XOs are not 19 or 1201 XOs and were found on many pro model VOTTs, hence "Pro XOs". The 808-8B drivers could be made into 802-8Gs with the correct changes.
Odd that he states they can't handle high power because they certainly should.
Too bad he used the 416-8A and mounted it from the rear, this changes all the design principles of the 19s allignment.
Think if I had them I would do a major switch, 416-8Bs mounted in front, real 19 XOs and rebuild the 808s to 802 specs.
Don't have a clue what he means about heavier wood! It could be he doubled up on ply and reduced the internal volume. It could be he used solid wood or did some other major change to the boxes and I would certainly question this to be sure.

It was 1201 I analyzed, i.e., M19.
Where can I find the schematic for 1209?
Gary L

According to the best of my knowledge Zilch, the 1201-8A and the Model 19 XOs are one in the same with different names and numbers on the face plates.
We have discussed this at length in many threads and most of the techs who have the knowledge say the 1201 is identicle to the 19.
Jmarkwarts schematic is the 1201 or the 19.
Did you mean to say "where can I find the schematic for the 1209"

Whoops, typo, Gary. It's 1209, what's in the ones for sale, I'm looking for. Not on the Altec Pro site under vintage.
I'm suggesting, along with you, it seems, that those are not M19 clones without M19 or equivalent crossovers. :(
I'd like to have a look at what they actually are. If they're what's apparently in 846B, we can surmise what they sound like:

They are deffinately not 19 XOs, nor are they whats in the 846s.
The 1209 was in the A7 Votts and I believe it has 1/4" female jack for connections. It is also meant to be placed horizontal rather then verticle and supposedly has no zobel filtering like the 19/1201s do.
I have never seen the schematic but I think, (Not Sure) Ron SS did some testing a while back and found major differences.
Try looking in the A 7 info and you will probably find the 1209 info.

It's the 1209's that have the zobel network. S'posed to flatten the woof's impedance. I have a pair of 19's that I pieced together. They use 902-8T's with the loading cap removed. They also have 1209 XO's. They sound absolutely out of this world. I can't imagine what improvement 1201's could possibly make. I certainly wouldn't pass on these for want of the original XO's.

The primary issue is whether 1209s incorporate compensation like M19 to mitigate the forward midrange and extend the highs.
That's what distinguishes M19 from VOTT, best I can tell from the schematics.
Zobel on the woofer has little, if anything, to do with that....

Since it has a MF and HF control... one would assume that it does.
As is the case with many other "collectable" speakers... since these were a DIY, albeit a very well done pair, they aren't selling even at the fairly low price they are offered at.

Words of advice:
The seller emailed me and let me know that if they fail to sell in the next day or so, he is going to sell them to his brother at a discount of the asking price.
If anyone is interested, I would pull the trigger before he pulls the auction.
Good luck.

There are major differences between the model 19/1201-8A XO and the 1209. I am sorry that I don't have the technical background to lay them out but I am sure someone here does.
I don't doubt that the 1209 can sound fine but it is not producing the same resultant sound dynamics of the 1201.
I have heard it said that the L Pads in the 19s/1201s are really not used as L pads at all but rather do something completely different.
Again, I don't have the background to be discussing this intelligently but I know for sure if you have both XOs on the bench there is major differences.

A search at Todd's Altec forum will bring up the exact differences between the 1201 and 1209.

Guess I'll hunt down 1209 similarly.
Storm needs some options to try:

Hi Tom,
I've read your posts on the Altec forum (and here) for quite some time, but I never said 'hi'. So, "Hi!"
This is a bit off-topic, but I had to ask while I was thinking about it:
You have had a lot of interesting Altec stuff over the years, and I bet a lot of people here would be surprised to learn what guises Altec came in. What I mean is all the Heath(kit) enclosures, etc. You are sitting on a wealth of info that a few members (myself included) would LOVE to see you share. C'mon- just a few crumbs for the library? Photos? Post that Altec porn! :D
There isn't much in the LH library, and Todd's site is...well...almost hard to find. Even a little tid-bit would be a worthy contribution.
Sorry to put you on the spot...:o:

Nathan---Like this? ;-)
:bouncy: Yes, 'like that'!!
I especially love the last pic. Beautiful cabinet.
Is it Heath? They definately made a superior cabinet to the Altec offerings. Where is your 9844a Heath?
Thanks, great stuff!!! :)

Nathan---The bottom photo is one of my Heath AS-21s, 9844s in sheep's clothing so to speak.
The top photo is the inside of one of the Heaths with one the new GPA compression drivers I replaced the stock 804s with. I was gonna get new diaphragms for the 804s from GPA and I said what the Hell and went the whole hog and got a pair of new drivers.

Very nice! However, I must disagree with you on one point. That is a 9844 in a tuxedo!! I hate to upset the Altec purists, but that beats the snot out of battleship grey ANY day. It's a lovely cabinet by any standard? I own 9844's and they are a wonderful representation of the classic Altec 2way. I prefer the 9844 to just about all other Altec's. They got that one "right"!
Beauty!
