Whacka-whacka guitar? Heaven forbid someone should do something outside the box. Hedges was not a mainstream performer, which means he was an actual musician and artist. There are precious few videos of him, but quite a few bootleg concert recordings out there. He could be a bit eccentric, true. One of my all time favorites, a terrible loss.

I am very familiar with Mr. Hedges characterizations of his music. I just don't care for the term "whacka whacka". As he said at one bootleg concert recording I have, "... this next tune leaves the realm of violent acoustic guitar music", and he did that all the time. He also said that some of his "tunings" were based on the work of classical composers.

I'm sorry, but I'm such a huge fan of Hedges that I take offense easily when I perceive any critique of him. Of far more importance is the inclusion of a work in his discography I did not know existed! Who released Strings of Steel, it was not Windham Hill. I've gotta follow that up!!

But in all fairness to the sound guy for our video...he is very good. My wife shot that little video with my Canon Powershot A430. She was standing behind and next to the mains, so out of mix range really.

My amp...a Rivera Knucklehead 55 was stolen from my shop the following week. It's back to my Marshall 50 watt combo for the time being...which served me well for 20 years. Maybe the Marshall arranged to have the Rivera whacked....they slept together in the same room for several years. Amp jealousy?

There do seem to be a lot of great Blues selections on YouTube. Listening to music all my life, the Blues resonates most powerfully of all for me. The more I can hear the blues in another kind of music, the more deeply it affects me. The less I can hear it, the more trivial it seems.

Jazz can be really close. Ellington, Coltrane, up tight. Basie derived music, not close at all. For instance, the music behind Sanatra in Vegas was the low point to my ears. Bands behind jazz singers in the Fifties and Sixties were awful. Just tripe as far as the continuum of jazz history goes.

Some Rock nails it. Straight pop music strays too far for me to even feel it. British music hall derived tunes are like show tunes and comedy songs - nothing from the Blues at all.

Indian (esp. tabla) and of course African and Afro-Cuban music are birds of a feather to me. Anything with good use of dissonances has a family resemblance, so I like Schoenberg piano compositions and Bulgarian vocal music a lot.

The real thing, like the two links I posted, are the best of all. Powerful stuff, the Blues. Bury me with a copy of Robert Johnson's Come On In My Kitchen. And some Howlin' Wolf. And Rev. Gary Davis. And...:blah:

In that post I lamented my ignorance of a great artist who lived, played and passed away unnoticed by me, despite my chronology overlapping his completely. I'm going on record as saying Michael Brecker was the most important musician since John Coltrane. He was apparently also one of the nicest men on earth. Unlike talented yet egomanical musicians like Miles, he was modest, even self-effacing. And I now realize his musical accomplishments were great indeed, not like "he plays great" but rather "greatness." In a time in history like this where the major figures in the news, entertainment, sports and politics are anything but role models and haven't actually done anything special, he stands a true hero. I honestly wish I could have died so he could have lived. Many musicians and listeners speak of this man in worshipful tones I have not encountered before in the world of music.

This video contains portions of interviews that deal with jazz played at very advanced levels versus audiences, music's and spirituality's coincident worlds, musical growth and learning in a musician's life, and other fine things. There is a reference in it to where further interview video is available.

I encourage anyone interested in these matters to explore what this man has to offer us in these difficult times we are facing. Most of all from his music. Dunno if I've mentioned this at some point, but watching Adrian Legg can make my head spin sometimes:


Back when I putzed around with guitar I was awed by Roy Buchanan at a gig doing pedal steel bends with his hands. Being a mere mortal, I instead fell upon a new but fire sale priced Bigsby Palm Pedal. I applied it to a 3/4 Gibson Melody maker I have and had at it. (When I acquired the guitar it had been scraped to plain ugly by the previous owner. I refinished it with a hand rub of Tung oil varnish, made a custom black pick guard, mounted a Fat Strat and the Palm Pedal. Trust me, I did it no harm.) While it goes maybe 20 percent to what Mr Legg does, it is very, very cool. Has anyone else here ever messed around with one?

I'm a huge fan of Michael as well. It was indeed a sad day when he passed on. I grew up listening to the sounds of the Brecker Brothers as me and my friends tried to emulate them in our own high school jazz combos. I just recently bought a couple of their old records on the bay, and it's great to hear him play those funky tunes with the old band (Straphangin!) . I think he got expotentially better as he aged and I still regard his "Time is of the Essence" CD as his finest work (just my opinion).

He is greatly missed....

In that post I lamented my ignorance of a great artist who lived, played and passed away unnoticed by me, despite my chronology overlapping his completely. I'm going on record as saying Michael Brecker was the most important musician since John Coltrane. He was apparently also one of the nicest men on earth. Unlike talented yet egomanical musicians like Miles, he was modest, even self-effacing. And I now realize his musical accomplishments were great indeed, not like "he plays great" but rather "greatness." In a time in history like this where the major figures in the news, entertainment, sports and politics are anything but role models and haven't actually done anything special, he stands a true hero. I honestly wish I could have died so he could have lived. Many musicians and listeners speak of this man in worshipful tones I have not encountered before in the world of music.

This video contains portions of interviews that deal with jazz played at very advanced levels versus audiences, music's and spirituality's coincident worlds, musical growth and learning in a musician's life, and other fine things. There is a reference in it to where further interview video is available.

I encourage anyone interested in these matters to explore what this man has to offer us in these difficult times we are facing. Most of all from his music. I think he kept getting better too. I was coincidentally listening to Time Is Of The Essence last night. Tonight I am listening to John Coltrane's Living Space and I am coming to the realization that I love Michael Brecker's music as much as Coltrane's. That is pretty much an ultimate statement for me.

Tales From The Hudson, Two Blocks From The Edge, Time Is Of The Essence, The Nearness Of You, Infinity (McCoy Tyner Trio), In The Door (Joey Calderazzo), the Jazz Baltica concerts, anything from the Nineties on - his later work just sends me. That he died at fifty seven and Coltrane at forty seems so wrong. Imagine what we are missing. They were both blazing ahead when they were taken from us.

Lucky for music lovers like us they both recorded and performed like crazy.

PS This is incredible, but I just discovered Brecker was quite handicapped when it came to playing wind instruments. Unlike say Bill Evans, who was perfectly physically built to play his instrument, Michael had a hole in each side of his larynx. That is why his neck inflated like a balloon whenever he blew. He played through soreness, pain and difficulty his entire career.

If you like acoustic music you might want to trip down to Big Lots and risk three dollars on this DVD. It is a documentary of sorts, a very inside look at the musical relationship between David Grisman and Jerry Garcia. Put together by Grisman's daughter, it is unusual in style and tone, all to the better as far as I am concerned. It was funny to read criticisms on the web about it not being a very well made documentary. There must be a lot of deaf, stupid film fans out there! These self appointed critics must think they are Robert Flaherty back fresh from making Nanook Of The North and Man Of Aran. Idiots. (I'm afraid I am a lifetime film fan. I have noticed most contemporary documentaries and films are polished to the point of slick. It doesn't work with the usual vapid contents. You can't polish a turd... Take a hint, people. Homicide: Life On The Street was shot hand held in Super 16. By no coincidence it was the best TV show of the Nineties.) The performances are presented pretty much in their entirety and that goes against most documentary filmmakers instincts, but it serves the subject very well here.

Enough film talk. For music lovers, this is a treasure. Just watch it and don't forget to play it through your good stereo, not your HT rig. If you like Dawg music, God Bless Ye Merry Gentlemen, a bonus special feature, is as good a Jazz performance as can be found anywhere. Don't miss the Outtakes section. Jerry Who with Vassar Clemons is supposed to be funny, but it is also touching and a revealing musician's take on audiences. What a sweet soul he is. If you take to the music video of The Thrill Is Gone in the feature, the video is a stand alone special feature too. Remember, if you need another another ace, go to the dog.

I think this film is very, very special and I can't recommend it enough. I can hear Bo now wondering out loud how it took me this long to discover this delightful treasure. The best three bucks I ever spent. The playing and singing is so good it is thrilling.

I have been revisiting one of my favorite voices ever, Judith Durham. Anzacs will be saying "Of course" and everyone else will be saying "Who?" (These folks are from Ian's area in particular.) Just look this up and you will know who, and many of you will remember. Search YouTube and you will find quite a few performances. Her voice has become even better with time, and to my old man's eyes she has grown ever more beautiful to watch.

If Judith seems a bit sad in the 1993 performance, it might be because her husband of twenty-four years was dying of an incurable disease, and those particular lyrics must have been difficult for her at that point.

Kaizer's orchestra is one of the top Norwegian live bands today. They are famous for their intensity on stage and that they always deliver. The audience loves them... I saw them with all my family 3 years ago and we were all thrilled.

Early this evening while playing and stocking Sooty and notice few more of these unwelcoming fuckers on my kitten so, I went for the vacuum as I don’t have fine metal comb, to comb it. it must find the fleas. The last thing I need is a whole load of them in the flat.

I guess these buggers where transmitted from the original owner I should have know better. Anyway afterwards I was looking around Google (Cat fleas) I found a few interesting facts and this youtube video, looks like one owner is also frustrated with the little blood sucking buggers.:(:banghead:

That was mellow bit of listening only using the pc monaural speaker at the moment; thou could easily plug the phone to AUX on the AVR and have it running directly to the JBL sound system.

This is an awesome sight that gets better and better each time! I think the Space Shuttle should be allowed to keep on flying its far more complex than any JBL loudspeaker but it does sound out of this world with JBL! It Just Boosts Lovely LOL. yes (Omaba) should keep the remaining fleet flying until NASA has an up and running new vehicle to replace the Shuttle! Why would a vocal phobic old fart like myself become an ABBA fan after all these years? A reaction to the non-musical to barely musical content that has been pop music in the years since. These four were huge through the Disco era and that alone was (relatively) a triumph of taste. It was all about how the girls look in and out of a dress even then, but in ABBA's case the girls could sing and the boys could write and play. And frankly they made and continue to make so many people so very happy. In 2008 that is a very good thing. Here they are still making people happy with music, outlasting and eventually sweeping aside Gangsta Rap, boy bands, the Disney Channel fluff and Kylie Minogue.

This is cool song from the early 2000’s that was featured for (The Beach 2000) starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

The monaural mix on this upload version seems to be missing a slight extra low end support that is found on the DVD extras featuring the same song only in stereo surround. Still its not bad with stereo mode even thou its monaural, you can hear the phasy whoosh in parts of the music video. Yes I’ve heard this too many times, its cool non-sync.

Well that is an interesting fact that wasn’t revealed on the 5 disc DVD region 2 set that have. What you didn’t think I was into Blade Runner? Like the international version that appeared on the Criterion Collection laserdisc during the, I think early 1990’s.

The isolated six-track Dolby stereo mix sounds so nice as that is a version I didn’t hear during its (1982) release. The cinema only had 35mm print optical twin track Dolby A version booked in. The 70mm would have been many times better and I guess this is the closest home audience can get to it today.

I’m not a fan of the final or the early 1990’s directors cut original with the camera flying over the mountains and yes, yes it looks like something from The Shining LOL but the speed of the way the visuals is moving and the fast tempo beat of the Vangelis score fits 10/10. :applaud:

Plus it’s a more pleasing ending rather than the dreadful WTF abrupt ending of the elevator door closing with fade to black end credits over black, a bit of morbid ending.

I have compact tape that I brought years ago and its not a mirror image of what I seemed to recall in the film music mix where the images and music all comes together and plays as one masterful piece didn’t impress me that much.

If I had tape Deck-ard I’d uploaded it to Youtube! oh! I forget the WMG are crawling around on the site no point the buggers might spoil it.

Anyway I started up the LCD after a few days I think Friday was the last time I used and I wanted to have quick peek at what Blade Runner looked and sounded like on it.

Many times many times better over the CRT widescreen and flat screen 42” many times because the smoothness of the soundtrack is far more creditable and sounds so more realistic, like it was back in the cinema only they had bigger screen LOL point is transparency! Not having to look at the front speakers it spoils the film because the screen is so narrow and tiny the big screen fits over the speakers like glove, nice and sweet as can be.

This is heavily boomy in the background while using the preamp MIC100 and ECM8000 calibration microphone placed nearby to the sofa. Sounds like I’m giving it an alternative f^(king commentary LOL.

I’ve switched the LCD video projector off using CRT at present until its all as when finished.

The LFE.1 track is overloading the MIC100 LOL sounds like sensurround LOL

Also on the piracy issue I had friend not so now anymore! A school friend that was shameful into buying sad pyrite films on VHS. I recall because he loaned me Blade Runner and it looked disgustingly sad.:barf: He was into so many of illegal films and it wouldn’t surprise me if he still is, not interested in those type of people because they feed the, valuates that steal these films and it ruins the film industry and cinemas alike.

Well, apparently I am just a lot more into ACCURACY than you are ...
Rachel's Song is pretty obvious in the soundtrack - go back and listen again if you need to ...

A lot of it was I really liked Bladerunner as an excellent Science Fiction film, another point was I was a BIG fan of early work by Vangelis - I have a vinyl copy of 666, the record he did as part of the greek rock group Aphrodite's Child, and his first solo album, Earth - both from the late 60s, early 70s ...

Anyway, I heard "Rachel's Song' used as part of the mix a few years back on one of those Trance albums by Mike Oakenfold, so I dug deep and found it was from Bladerunner, and also found that there had not been an official Vangelis soundtrack release, just some unsatisfying third party thing ... that why I hunted down his soundtrack ... who wants a sound-a-like act doing such great music?
Thats probably why you didn't like the soundtrack tape you had - it was official, but - not the real thing from the movie, not the original Vangelis music..

If you like the JBLs - dig up some early Vangelis ... highly recommended!

When I first saw BR in the it had Harrison Fords voice as the narrator.
Ford said that he hated that part, I did enjoy it. I have watched BR without the narration, but I glad that I have heard it there are many holes in the story that are filled by the narration.

Narration it’s used in many other films many and it fits the film nicely in Blade Runner (1982 orignal version) kinder like a detective story.

Most of if not all of Martin Scorsese films and I like it, because its like an extra bass feel when it comes in on the mix.:p

I just like playing the opening of the John Williams score the way the strings go up and then drop down with wicked fanged vampire THX JBL feeling is spot on in Dolby stereo 4:2:4.

Best Dolby stereo wolf howling on the centre to surrounds then the score sweeps over the LCR mostly high in the centre Dolby 4:2:4 matrix mix. I can play the howling followed by the strings to the start of the action then play it back again.

This isn’t a bad attempt of placing the CD album next to the video image that is by the way an illegal source that is all over the sad internet. The film is in monaural soundtrack its also cropped badly on the sides and top/bottom of the 2.35:1 scope frame.

My wife and I met Diane Birch a couple weeks ago and asked her when she was going to do a DVD. She said that she was working on it. I'd really like to see her do a Bible Belt DVD. At the very least something like the four song DVD A Fine Frenzy did.
