Hi

I´m new at the forum, I got here becuse I have been trying to find information about the diference between a 605-A and a 605-B.

I got my speakers; a pair of 605-B by casuality. a relative had a big pair of speakers in his attic that had been not used for MANY years and wanted to give them away so I told him I was interested...I had no idea what was inside those big, ugly , old boxes...One of the best speakers I have ever heard and owned.

I have been an Altec fan since then (5 years aprox). but never have found any info about the diference between this 2 models.

I have also read that the 605´s where not as good as the 604´s

Hope someone can give any info.

Thanks

Alonso

The only difference I am aware of is that the surround for the 604B has been changed to cloth from the paper of the 605A.

And what for?

Did the 605B launching was trying to change perception about bad specs in the 605A?

I don't know. Weren't the surrounds on the 604 changed at about the same time? I think you might find information about this in the product histories.

My 605As have corrugated cloth surrounds.

As to whether 604s or 605s are better is a matter of taste though it seems that at the time the audio pros preferred the 604.

I've never directly compared but I'm under the impression the 605 has deeper bass in a smaller box and a flatter midrange and the 604 a livelier midrange and more extended highs.

Of course I may be totally full of BS, especially given the many models of 604 made. Generalizations here must be very general, even as generalizations go. ;-)

Right you are--they both have cloth surrounds. I should have double checked. I can't find any differences. I have the Altec sheet on the 605B, but not the 605A, and I don't see any differences between them in the other information I can find--same impedance, same nominal crossover frequency--though I cannot confirm that the crossover itself is the same.

Dave---My 605As use the 1600 C crossover.

A generally astute fella at the Altec forum claims the woofer on the 605A is straight 416 but the 605B uses a 515 cone with the 416 motor. I don't know, for all I know they used the same cone, I reckon one could find out easily enough in the library here.

Of course some of the Bs are gray rather than green. ;-)

dAVID:

I have never found a 605B sheet, the more close I got was a 604-E. Can you E-mail me a copy of the specification sheet. I will aprecciate it.

Well here is a difference I have found: mine uses a gray color (also the speaker is gray not green) Crossover model : N-1500A
