I’m in the process of restoring three pairs of L166s (4 x refoaming, replacing one or two LE5s & one 066, wood work, audiophile capacitors & wires etc.). Nice winter project. :)

During my search for the 066, I’ve found that 077s are easier to get hold on – probably because they are repairable (not cheap though).

This started me wondering:
How about building a pair of “JBL L177” which would be the natural model number of a L166 with the use of 077 HF-unit:
· Same woofer (122A)
· Same midrange (LE5-8 – maybe changed to LE5-2 or 2105)
· 077 for high frequency
· X-over???
Could the original N166 be reused/modified (cuts to tweeter at 6 kHz – in L65 Jubal 077 is used from 6˝ kHz). Probably a sensitivity issue as well?

· New enclosures build close to the specs for L166 (to fit the woofer), but
o “mirrored” (for better stereo perspective)
o the midrange in level with the front (less reflections)
o new front grills (better transparency)
o stand integrated/woofer raised to app. 20"
I very much like the sound of the L166s that are working. They are on 18” stands, deliver enough and tight bass for the room (15 x 15 feet) – and are close to max WAF…

Comments/opinions/suggestions to this (crazy?) idea are welcome – especially on the X-over question.

Claus

(PS: I'll leave the old enclosures as they are so I can go back to the original set up).

Consider 104h-2 or 3 for mids. I made the change from the LE5-2 mids on my L100s. I made money on the deal and they sounded much nicer.

Well, the only difference between yours and the L65A would be your LE5-8 mids vs. LE5-5 mids, so I'd start by looking at the N65A crossover, with the addition of bypass caps. The level controls should let you balance out differences.

You might also want to consider 035Ti's instead of 077's - many think they sound better.
