Oh dear...I was unfortunate enough to be at a New Years Eve party where the host thought it would be good idea to 'party' to one of these nasty devices.
That low-freq response plot is just plain weird. I was slightly pi**ed at the party and even under those conditions the thing still sounded dire....Now I know why!
Couldn't wait to get home and listen to my JBL's.
p.s. were those plots measured in semi-anechoic conditions (i.e. outside) and is there some weird phase thing going on around 100-300Hz - that dip is shifting depending on mic. location so is the transition between the internal 'sub' and the mid-hi speakers a bit crap?

p.s. were those plots measured in semi-anechoic conditions, i.e. outside?Nope. That's in-room non-windowed response, i.e., what it sounds like here.
Clearly, the "big bass" dies below 70 Hz, and I can tell you from having also measured it sinusoidal, the plastic case resonates at several frequencies below 300 Hz.
As clock radios go, tho, it's a fairly decent one.... ;)

Have you ever heard this? How does it compare to the Bose?
JBL Harmony Personal Music System: it won a design award in 1998, but that's got nothing to do with how it sounds.

I was disapointed in the sound of the Harmony radio from Jbl, I think the Bose Wave Radio beats it hands down. The Wave is easier to set up sounds better and you can see the screen better. The Harmony from JBL has a screen that requires a magnifying glass to see if you are in the 50+ age bracket as I am. I will not suck up here to Bose because I think most of there products are junk but, this little radio is a must have.:o:

Hey! I resemble that remark. :p
That is an excellent point. The screen on the JBL does look difficult to see, while the Bose appears better.

The Boston Acoustics MiroSystem blows away the Bose Wave! It actually has some low end response which is adjustable. They are pricey, $500, but clearly a step up sound wise over the "Blows", I mean Bose.:barf:

I have a Boston Acoustics Receptor clock radio - it's great!

I find the plot interesting. It says a great deal about the "average" non-audio enthusiast and their perception of "good" audio quality/good sound.
Bose didn't choose such response by accident. My pure guess is they did some type of DOE or attribute study to dicern what a consumer percieves as "good" and developed the wave radio to accomodate such tastes.
The tuned 85Hz peak in both nearfield and midfield indicates to me that this frequency translates to "real deep bass" to Joe Bag-o-Doughnuts, (plus the in room respose will fill in the lower end a bit). In the midfield, the rising response to ~5kHz with a peak at ~15kHz indicates to me that Joe B. also percieves this response as "good sound quality".
Considering the average non-audio enthusiast has only cheap clock radio and factory car stereo as a baseline to judge sound by, the Bose Wave is a big step up.
Interesting, very very interesting.

at the local bar the stereo has been missing the entire left channel for months now and i seem to be the only one who cares.it seems that the majority of people are satisfied with mediocre sound as long as it has lots of "features".hang on to the cd's because even though they are inferior to other formats they may end up as the best source available.jeez i never thought i would hear myself say that:banghead:

Is this radio for sale?
... the 1m plot shows a surprisingly decent +/- 3dB response from 350Hz to 18KHz... that is better than many vintage systems. I do find that characteristic Bose one note bass pretty annoying though.
