Please post a response if you own or have owned 846A, 846B or 846U Altec Loudspeakers.

I am just doing an unscientific study to see how many of the 6,000+ members around the world own these speakers and to get a better understanding of how many Altec might have produced.

Thank you for your cooperation.

-Storm.

Okay.

With the lack of additional posts - what can I conclude?

Are these Altecs much more scarce than I thought?

Out of nearly 6K members and much more that have no idea about this forum around the world - I truly wonder how many can still exist.

Thank you for your help in this un-scientific study.

;)

Valencias aren't uncommon at all, I know several owners. It's just after your 300+ repetitive, unnecessary posts about them, no one will admit it now.

Sorry - I dont mean to be repetitive, just thought in individual thread would be great.

Maybe we need to set up something on this forum or site and list all the speakers JBL and ALTEC produced and everyone can put a check next to the ones they own.

Just a thought. I am just intrigued to understand how many Altec could have produced and how many are still out there.

Thanks.

You should probably conclude from this poll and from looking over the thousands of posts on this forum, that the membership of the Lansing Heritage Forum is skewed toward JBL... which is not a reflection on the quality of Altecs... just the fact that there are more JBL fans here than Altec heads... we are all welcome here and many of us have had or do have examples of both in our stables.

You should ask about your speakers on Todd White's forum where the discussion centers on Altecs.

Thanks for the advice Widget - but I will stick to this forum.

I want to get the Altec heads out of the woodwork on this forum. This can breed a healthly discussion of Altec, just as well as JBL.

I never saw a SIGN on this site stating JBL topics only.

It's a play on words, nothing else.

So, who do I listen to - the voices in my head? Why would I do that if I came here for advice and conversation?

;)

A friend owns a pair of 846A; I used to own a pair of 846B until I sold them and the new owner took them to Australia.

Storm, if you think it is tough finding Valencia owners, just try putting together a network of Lansing Iconic owners!

I don't know if there are any now..... BUT.... A guy contacted me about two months ago with a set of Altec Iconic cabinets.... I believe he was based in Collinsville. From what I can remember they were missing grilles. Anyway, he called me and said he was made "an offer he couldn't refuse" and sold them before I had a stab at them.

Yes, I am a new guy here and thought I'd say hello. I just picked up a pair of 846B's today that are in great shape. I live north of DFW, TX and these were in the local paper today for an Estate Sale coming up this weekend. I picked them up earlier this afternoon and haven't even had time to listen to them! They are in my garage, though. I leave tomorrow for the CES show in Vegas next week so I won't get to hear them till I get back next Friday. Sheesh.

I will fill everyone in with more info about myself as time allows. I'm sitting here getting some paperwork done before my flight tomorrow. Look forward to talking to all and learning more about these and other Altecs! My first pair!

Attached are some photos...

Maron, as a collector with a house full of vintage audio... your response seems needlessly critical and beside the point. I get out plenty, yet really enjoy my old gear. Lighten up!

Steve,,,What I ment was,,,There is still alot of vintage gear to be had,,,We find collecting and restoring is perserving the past for newer generations to enjoy..

Pair of 846a's.. soon to be replaced by 604c's in 606 cabinets. The Valencia's are great speakers with that all too Altec sound.

btw, this thread would be easier if the forum had one of those poll apps that show the results.

- Actually this forum ( website ) does have this ability ( though that might not have been the case back in 2007 ).

- The option to add/include a poll in a thread has to be chosen when the thread is created ( if I remember correctly ) .

- No 846s here, though I do love my 288-8K compression drivers .
