Which JBLs are these???

The woofer is a LE15A and the horn is a LE18 and the tweeter is a 2402H.

Personally, I think they look home-built. That was one of the plans in the old JBL speaker construction kit. I've still got that kit somewhere, the one with the vacuum-molded white plastic cover on the box. I'm sure someone has a link to that kit..but I digress. They just have that home-built look to them, to me (I built one, once). Others here are better able to judge that than me, though.

I note the red wax seals are missing on the LE85, so the actual diaphragms in place are "indeterminate," unless that additional label on the rear of it tells the specifics....

Hi, some clarification for you.

The C50SM S8 was a JBL consumer/semipro model. It had the C50SM Studio monitor cabinet with the LE15 woofer, type 375 4 inch VC 2 inch throat compression driver and H93 2 inch throat short horn and L91 slant lenses. The Tweeter would be the 075 bullet. The appropriate 2 crossovers would be included. The cabinet was silver gray or unfinished.

The 4320/early 4331/4333 was the Walnut cabinet pro version which looks like yours with the cutout sides and top/bottom enclosed frame. Is there an identifying badge on the back of the cabinet at all? Would have a 450x-WX type identifier.

Anyway, Likely you have the 4320 which originally was 2 way design with the LE15A driver (has already been refoamed with a more modern grey foam). You have the consumer LE85 midrange compression drivers (pro equivalent 2420) with the likely H91 horns (Pro = 2311) and L91 older style slant lenses that are screwed onto the baffle (pro = 2308). The cabinet had an opening for extra tweeter mounting if that modification was desired later.

BTW, the early 4331/4333 with same cabinet were loaded with the then new 2331 (consumer 136) alnico woofer.

The most common tweeter add-on was the 075/2402 alnico bullet tweeter. The slot tweeter had not been produced until later with the L300/L65 and the later 4333 series monitors.

Can't say whether your speakers originally were loaded up this way or were maybe assembled/reassembled to this configuration. However, the configuration is a typical JBL combination. Add to that your good condition grilles and seemingly decent veneer and you done good!!

You didn't tell us the really juicy part? What'd they cost 'ya?

Well, the woofer grill looks custom - but this image shows C50s in wood finish ...

That grill frame is custom...It would have been painted black before applying grill cloth.;)

Sure - I painted my grill frames flat black before I applied the deep blue Zilch cloth myself ... just looks better that way - tho dark wood through that tan cloth would have stood out too.

Here's an image of the 4320's from the 1974 JBL Pro Catalog. Similar cabinets available for the earliest version of the 4330/4331 and 4332/4333 on the next 2 pages.

Darned if I know - I downloaded it to my references folder a while back - but I assume its from somewhere in the Lansing Heritage Library.
