Recone

I've got some LE15A's that need to be reconed. Can they recone these to something that will hold more power and sound as good. I've got an old Mac 2300(300RMS) and a Phase Linear 700B(350RMS) that I sometimes like to crank. Usually when I am doing the cranking alcohol is somehow involved. I've never blown a speaker sober. Who is recognized as the best source for reconing? Thanks!

Hey Bill.

1) Send me the LE-15A's for their protection.
2) Install 15" Peavey drivers from partsexpress.com p/n 294-305
3) Crank away (if the voice coils blow, you can replace the basket)
4) Remove yourself from the organ donor list.

(more seriously, what size cabinet are they in? ... assuming you'd like to
stay with a JBL driver as a "replacement")

Hi Grumpy, They're not in a cabinet right now. I'm retiring soon and I'll have time to build some proper cabinets. Or.....at least experiment like I used to when I was a little younger. Speaking of experiment, does it harm these speakers to orient them face down in a cabinet? Thanks

reconing an LE15A appears to run north of $200 each.

I'm thinking you could do better getting 2225 cores and having them
reconed as 2235H for roughly the same dough. Especially if you're starting
from scratch. There may be LE15A fans here that will kindly reject this
approach and tell you otherwise... OK by me :)

I'm not qualified to recommend facing any particular driver face down, but
I'd think foam surround units (like we're discussing here so far) would not
be prime candidates for this treatment. Unless the suspension is up to it
(surround and spider, and the cone assy not heavy, or the unit is specifically
designed with an offset to compensate for gravity ... in which case it would
not work well vertically) I can just say that you'll have to ask someone else.

I'm thinking you quit to soon. You'll never Know if you could have pulled that off and at this very moment been protecting a pair of LE15's. Oh well
