Hello all- a friend of mine has four Altec Lansing monoblock amplifiers he got years ago from the Mussel Shoals recording studio. He described them only as being about 70 lbs., multi output taps and ~200W each. He'll get back to me some day soon with more details (and model #s, hopefully- might be 1590B?), but does this ring a bell with anyone, and do you think I should go through the trouble of getting my hands on them? He's coming to visit some time around the holidays, and would trade them for various stuff I've set aside for him.

Thanks in advance,

je

Yep, they're 1590Bs. Four of them. Anybody with experience/opinions, or specs/documentation?

Thanks in advance,

Thanks- that's about as much info as I had. I appreciate the post. We'll see (if I bother picking these up) what they might do for me...

Thanks,

Y'all are pretty quiet on this subject, and E-Bay's sold three of them lately for about $45-65 a piece, so I take it that they're not terribly in-demand. Anybody else looking for these beasts? I'm sure they could help heat up a cold basement theater, if nothing else...they're currently in Alabama, not sure what dollar amount my buddy would be looking for, but I'd imagine it's not much.

If the local Little League field needs a PA you could be a hero, otherwise....

boatanchors for home audio

Like all Altec green, they were great for their intended use. Most still are, but can be outperformed with modern tech at less than 1/4 the size. If you need a limited-bandwidth SS audio amp that can auto-switch from AC line to DC backup on a budget, they're the bomb.

Understood, thanks. A charity setup is what I was picturing, actually, but I'm not looking to house them until I find the needy charity...

Thanks,

actually the 1590B monoblock is a great sounding amp. Only a bonehead who hasn't heard them would diss them or someone used to the 'quality' sound out of their 'vintage' realistic receiver maybe. I used them with a paid of JBL l-120's ,2 of them and it was fantastic. For a solid state monoblock amp, the 1590B is really a great sounding amp IMO
