View Full Version : Need help identify this Altec diaphragm

Hello,

I consulted with a knowledgeable seller on eBay and he concluded that it is not an original Altec diaphragm and does not look like the one sold by GPA. I just looked at the GPA guide to replacing diaphragm for the 800 and 900 series and the pic of it is somewhat similar to mine, except mine has no + or - labeling. Do you know the source of this diaphragm? It came out of an 802-8G and the part number is the correct Altec part number according to GPA. Please post a GPA diaphragm pic if you have any.

No pics but it sure looks like the GPAs I have.
One note however; Appears someone did a repair to the leads at the bend!

Dave and Gary,

Thanks for identifying this diaphragm. I am glad to hear that it is GPA made. The bottom side of it does look very well made with excellent material so I was a bit skeptical that this is a Made in China product. I have since put the driver back into the Model 19, but I did check briefly when it was opened and didn't see any sign of repair on the leads.

Dave is here but might not have jumped in on this thread in this forum.
I share your problems with different posts and keeping things straight.
Dave Wojo is a friend and I consider him an expert with most things Altec.

From your pics, it does look as though your lead wires have been repaired.
Just above the aluminum diaphram and where the leads take a bend is where they often break or fry. Yours have a Bulbus solder joint covered with a copper colored coating indicating a repair!
They do not come this way from GPA.
Here is a similar diaphram with stock leads.

I have had a few Altec diaphrams with that problem of breaking at the bend.

A friend of mine has done some repairs to fix them for me(I don't have the patience).

Newer diaphrams have a better lead connector that fixed that problem.

I think you are confusing the old style leads with the late version that GPA uses. The new style enter's the frame at the bottom end and connects to the terminal. This terminal was not intended to be soldered to, but looks like the owner did without heat-sinking the terminal and the transfer of some of this heat melted off the insulation on the lead. I see no solder repair, but perhaps a glob of insulation from the heat exposure. Now get back to listening!!!

I have had a couple repaired by member DWOJO and he does a great job.
Like you, I don't have the patients or abilities for this intricate stuff.
Can't tell any diff from new to repaired.

I applaud those folks with enough dexterity and patience to make those repairs. I hear some of them use high powered magnifying glasses to make their visual inspections. Some of them even repair voice coils with tiny little solder joints to give them a little more life!

RonI know David! Great guy too. He does know his Altec P,s and Q,s, we have spoken alot. He sold me some Altec 421-8LF,s with the original cones, and they are in superb condition.

Someone else out there like me! :D

DWOJO is the Altec guru on the AK forum!

I don't think Dave assigns himself to any one forum at all and I have seen him on many.

Never met him but have to say he has been a gem in helping me on numerous projects. When I needed bulbs for my Sansui G 9000 he had them, anything Altec, he either knows the answer or will point you to it.:applaud:

He is a member here as well as at AK and it is members like Dave that help to make collecting Vintage gear an enjoyable passtime.

I have seen many of his upgrades and can only hope to hear some one day.
