Does anyone have some information on the JBL Gauss co-axial's? I'm pretty sure that JBL had aquired Gauss at some point, and that the company had a line of co-axial monitors, but information is elusive, and actual drivers are near impossible to come by. Thanks for ANY comments on this rare breed.

I'm no athority by any means, but I understand that the Urei monitors used Altec originally, then switched to JBL. JBL eventually aquired Urei. It was EV that aquired Gauss a few years ago and then ended the Gauss line.

You mean these guys here?? That is not an Altec woofer and the compression driver looks like a 2425 with no tire.

The reference chart just gives you revision numbers and the coaxes so it's not much help.

If anyone cares...

Those co-axials are PAS (Professional Audio Systems) CXL-1580 (3" VC)...OEM'ed for UREI with a JBL 2425 driver.

I changed my answer. It's definitely a CXL-1580

Why? Because the CXL-1580 is for a 1" exit compression driver. The CX-2580 has a 4" voice coil and is for a 2" exit compression driver.

The next co-ax for the UREI 813C was the 801C which was a JBL E145 modified into a co-ax. I believe Rob has one or two of those. I seen pitchers.

Too bad the seller doesn't really know what it is...although PAS woofers are very much like Altec....as well as being very underrated.

Great stuff made right here in SoCal.

Thanks Edge

That's one mystery solved. I was wondering what woofers those were. Edge which driver would that be in the matrix, if it's in there at all??? Maybe we can add the driver photo's to the Photo Gallery so we have them there and they won't get "lost" with the thread over time??

Rob,

That would be the 801B. The recone parts list for "U801B" says NLA...from JBL that is. Recone kits are still available from PAS as it's still a current product.

I'm not certain if there was anything unique that Urei had PAS do to the driver....I doubt it.

I am familiar with all of the Urei series A, B, and C, as we own all of the varieties. What I was looking for was pictures / information on the Gauss 3588, 3288 series. I had seen an auction on EBay for a pair of 3588's some time ago, but they are extremely rare.

I was mistaken in who had bought out Gauss. Thank you for the information there.

Any further information on Gauss Coaxial's would as always be greatly appreciated! Thanks all!

Frederick (UreiCollector)

PS. The Urei series used

A = Altec Lansing Coaxial / Eminance LF Driver
B = PAS Woofer with JBL compression Driver / Eminance LF Driver
C = JBL Throughout

There is a JBL/Gauss connection. The loudspeaker division of Gauss was originally headed by Ed May, JBL's former transducer engineer after he left JBL in 1969. He designed their initial series of drivers which were intended to be musical instrument speakers meant to compete with JBL's "F" series. I believe the coaxials came later, after he left in 1973.

I am posting photos of some Gauss speakers I have for sale in the LA area. The drivers in the 7258 monitors are the 3588 co-ax 15" drivers mentioned in this post. also shown are two very large 7480 studio monitors, anchored by 18" drivers.

Just a though - post a price and put your ad in the For Sale section?

Thanks for sharing these Gauss beauties... I rotated this one for a better view.

I wonder if there is a missing lens or something in front of the mid horn. Does anyone have more info on these?

BTW: Welcome aboard... and as Heather pointed out, it wouldn't be a bad idea to also start a new thread in the Market Place area announcing their sale.

Damn... that's too bad. Don has been away for quite a spell... hopefully when he returns this and other mysteries will be cleared up.

They do look like serious pieces of gear. I would love to audition them.

Unfortunately, it looks like the PAS stuff is no longer going to be made in the USA. We regularly are in contact with PAS (reconing center), and in one of our recent conversations, we found out that PAS has been bought out by a far-Eastern company... and that factory recone kits for the classic PAS drivers will NO LONGER be available.

We've been scrambling to find appropriate third-party parts to replace these factory kits for the PAS drivers... fortunately, we've been able to sub in some other readily-available parts and keep 'em going up to very near original spec...

Regards,
Gordon.

FWIW, Renkus also marketed a duplex/coaxial, their SSD-1800 1 inch HF driver on the CXL-1580 using the stock CXL horn. I believe these were also available direct from PAS without a horn driver attached.

Notice Renkus omitted the "EV" type magnet cover and used a simple mounting bracket.

I just cut the basic panels for boxes for this pair today.
