Had some spare parts laying around. 4530 cabs loaded them with LE15B's
Made up some high freq. cabs using 2340 horns, LE 85's and 077's
The LX16A's and 3106's with all new components except inductors.
Solen, Audio Cap, and Wonder Caps for the capacitors. Resistors were
Mills brand. The 3106's used 16ga. sidewinder coils. Will take more pics
in a few days. Should have taken more from start to finish:( Still have to
make some grills.

I took the liberty of downloading the pictures in the numeric order listed, resizing, and rotating as needed. Hope this helps the discussion. Nice work! However, if the original poster has any objection, I or mods can remove the post. Thanks.

Years ago when JBL would sell a 4520 for home use, they would dress it up real nice call it a C55 and hang a 375 with that round lens that was at least a foot across, down in the mouth. Mostly just wanted to know if the LE15B plays the horn or if the cabinet chokes it. Knew a guy wouldn't put glass anywhere in or on a horn but if you don't put some glass in the woofer compartment they sound nasty somewhere in the midrange sort of lihe an empty gym. Anyway like to know about that combination. Cones like a D140 but the backside isn't. That horn on the ground next to your C40, I've seen them but I've never heard one play. What fits it (driver) and what does it sound like.

The horn next to it is a model 2360, 40X90. It can be used with any 2" JBL
driver. Sounds good but needs room to project. Only had 20 minutes to
listen, have to do some more. The LE15B seems to act like a 2205A but
about 5Hz lower. Did not hear any driver unloading chacteristics

[If they're headed for 150-4C territory, I could hold out a bit longer.... :p ]

True. Nice work jbl4ever, congrats.

Know someone locally that has, and had several of them, and used to build 4530's all 2-3 years for those, afaik 8 pairs so far. This is a pair he uses in his shop, I can hear them regularly when I visit him. The sound is unbeatable, when driven by it's own amp.

See if you can hear a pair of 4520's with a pair of 2225h and the 2397
horn. Sweet and a 40hz note that makes your pants dance:D

Can you imagine if you could scale a 4520 up for 2 18 inch. Of course you'd have to make it moduler or when you went to move it you'd be like some poor fool who built a boat in his basement. I think most garage conversions could fit 2 of those a 70 inch TV and still have room for 2 or 3 people as long as you had a seperate laundry room, and even if you got broken into they probably wouldn't come prepared to deal with that.

Can imagine only. I know 4520's only from live music until now, hope to get an opportunity to hear those once in domestic use, with recorded music. Most living rooms aren't made for that.

Sorry didn't want to hijack this thread. :o: But since we are talking exotic DIY - one more, on topic: Zilch you should see what he does with L200 cabs. Unfortunately I don't have pics here, but he makes them to 3-ways :duck:with altec-style horns embedded into the baffle and 077's placed on top of them, a bit staggered back for optimal time alignment - pretty cool.

Nice work! Your workshop looks like a JBL version of the 'mad scientist! Intriguing little boxes everywhere, cardboard, metal. wood and it's all good. Wish I could hear the pair.:applaud:

The 3 pictures show the layout and the board used as a fixture. Put together as a sub assembly. This one used JBL inductors, Solen, Audio Cap and Wonder Cap for capacitors. These Xovers were JBL grey and
repainted with satin black. After hearing the improvement I will be redoing
all my Xovers. Will try some Mundorf supreme silver/oil caps on the next
ones and maybe some CC's:)

I went to JBL4ever's workshop yesterday and heard the speakers driven by a JBL Urei 6290 amp. They sounded great including a good solid bass kick down to about 45 Hz. I was really impressed by the upgraded crossovers. The 2405/077's sounded significantly clearer and more articulate than the old components. I definately need to upgrade my LX13 and 3105 crossovers in my L-300-style system. The improvement was not subtile. I think anyone with old JBL networks would do well to upgrade the series capacitors and add bypass caps to their mid and high frequency networks. It's a lot of improvement for not much money.

I have a custom modified 4530 - modified to be front-loaded...... what a great improvement using it front-loaded. Its over on my grandmothers covered patio at the moment on its side as the stand for a 7' X 4' 1 inch thick glass tabletop ( it had a furniture dolly under it and you could roll the table), last time I was over there someone took it off the dolly and has it flat on the cement:banghead: ....and my grandmother has plants on the table and I sure hope it hasn't gotten watered itself!! . I better get over there and put the tables base under the glass and retrieve the cabinet. I used a 2395 on top of the cabinet (forget what driver is on the horn/lense) which is as wide as the cabinet... on the cabinet under the 2395 in the "V" of the lense I put a 2405. the overall sound is very nice. I will have to retrieve it and take some photos to show you how to modify a 4530 to be a front-loaded horn. Mark
