My last full day in Japan was spent with Mori Shima as my guide. Mori is a contributing author to Stereo Sound magazine and acted as translator for the article written by Steve Schell and I for Stereo Sound's JBL 60th anniversary book. Mori initially took me to the Asakusa district. This is the one district in Tokyo that preserves a sense of the old city. There is a huge indoor market in the district as illustrated in the two photos immediately below. At the end of this market is one of the few pagodas in Tokyo shown in the fourth photo. The heart of the district is a Buddhist temple called Sensoji for which the entrance can be seen in the 5th photo.

I have no idea what the photo immediately below was about. As we were walking to the steps of the temple, a Japanese camera crew and this delegation descended the stairs. Somehow, I don't think it is a Buddhist ritual, though I could be wrong. Immediately below that picture is an illustration of the shrine inside the temple. Below that is a picture of Mori drinking from a fountain said to contain healing waters.

The pictures below are all from the Akihabara district - Electric Town. This has to be the world center for gadget retailing.

We ended the day in the Shibuya district. This is the nightlife center for young Japanese. We had dinner in a bar/restaurant at the top of a seven story bookstore. It seemed like an odd location to me, but restaurants and bars can be found in the strangest places in Tokyo. The restaurant staff all greet you as you walk in, and join en mass to wish you well as you leave. The district is known for its blazing city lights at nighttime - something that I am obviously trying to capture below.

More pictures from the Shibuya district. The district gained some fame in North America and the main shooting location for the movie Lost in Translation. As the owner of a red 87 Corvette, I couldn't resist the second picture below. The final picture is of the Shibuya station. The main square is empty as it had just been cleared out after a campaign speech by a contender for the position of the next Japanese Prime Minister.
