Friday, September 8 marked the official launch of JBL's 60th anniversary flagship speaker, the Everest DD66000. The morning of the 8th was spent in setup and rehearsals at the main ballroon in the Imperial Hotel. The first three pictures show the system and venue. There are four finishes for the system (rosewood, maple, cherry and ebony) and stereo pairs of each example were on display. The third picture shows Greg Timbers checking out his babies. The last picture shows Ken Yasuda, Gina Harman, Dan Aschcraft and Paul Bente standing next to Everest.

This next series of photos shows the actual launch. Around 200 invited dealers and press representatives filled the room. The second picture was my attempt to try and capture some of the spectacle of the launch. This picture does not do it justice. I have never seen such a high profile and high production value introduction. The third photo shows Paul Bente giving one of the keynote speeches. The last picture was taken after the formal presentation as attendees were allowed to examine the systems.

This next series of pictures shows the construction and components of Everest. The second picture illustrates one of the 1501AL bass drivers. The third picture illustrates what is arguably the heart of the system, the brand new 476Be which is a 4" beryllium diaphragm compression driver. The last picture shows the comprehensive bracing used in the cabinet construction.

This picture deserved a post all of its own. I have no idea of the background behind the ritual performed by "Mr. JBL", but I noted that a slide whistle and coconut appeared to be an integral part.

After the launch, Harman Japan treated our touring party to a dinner at a very exclusive Japanese restaurant in the Ginza district. These photos were taken walking from the restuarant back to the hotel.
