Here's an interesting refoam job on a 2231A as far as I can tell. Looks like the normal foam rot was replaced with a circular ring of sheet packing foam (the kind used as a liner or maybe a large envelope). It looks properly glued to the back of the cone. From the front, looks like the foam was painted or Sharpie'd black but it looks more salt 'n pepper. Might even work?!

Here's the pics.

Hope the prospective buyer knows that the performance of that driver in its current condition will not be up to JBL performance levels!

You have to at least give the guy credit for trying - he probably didn't know of the availability of aftermarket surrounds. His job is definitely better than my first attempt, (many years ago when I too didn't know about aftermarket foams) - I did an old Altec woofer with silicone sealer. The Internet has since brought me up to speed...

I agree -- he did try,

but a simple google search for 'jbl foam repair' pulls up 96K hits.... :blah:

it seems that seller isn't trying to hide that fake surrounds,i guess he is still unaware about the availability of aftermarket surrounds:D

Seems like he isn't the only one out there who is unaware of replacement foam surrounds. This situation lends to attractive prices for us on vintage JBL speakers with the sellers thinking they can't be repaired.

To be honest, he's done a better job than what a pro 'wannabe' reconer did to a 2215 I picked up once. And HE used a proper kit!
We all learn by our (or others) mistakes.
Yes, we should all be grateful for the 'net and the fact that someone does make quality aftermarket surrounds these days.
(shame about some of the sh*t ones that are out there tho', which I bet a few of us have been caught out with, me included.)
