Did Altec make alot of speakers?

Just trying to figure out how many might be out there waiting for me...

Were the 846U speakers special order? Were there Altec stores or were Altecs marketed at regular audio stores?

Can anyone venture to guess - since the serial numbers don't help - how many Altec 846 series speakers were made?

I doubt many because wasn't that time of 1970-1975 when they were in production - JBL was the main home speaker company that dominated, correct?

I own three pairs of 846A valencias myself, so I know they made that many. They are great speakers, but I have some JBL's now which are so much better.
