December 31st is the last day to make a charitable contribution and be able to deduct it for 2004 . If you haven't decided who to endow your millions to yet, might I suggest you donate just a small portion towards the maintenance of this site. $5, $10, $20, $25, $30.....or whatever. Every little bit helps. It's easy. Just click the 'Donate' icon in the upper right corner.

yep good to see... and fast too... thanks for keeping up with this stuff Bo!

and i am no CPA either (still studying),
without researching, I think that the donations go under operations and not financing -- typically the financing section will include such things as stocks/bonds (Issuance, repurchases, redemptions, dividends, yada yada yada)

I submit that the receipt of donation income here on LHS is more of a day to day operations type activity.

Investment section is typically things like major equipment, buildings etc....

again, this is without research, so proceed with caution...

I can look into this in a few weeks if anyone really wants me to...

here is a brief outline... taken from here... http://www.investopedia.com/articles/01/110701.asp

The following is a list of the various areas of the cash flow statement and what they mean:

Cash flow from operating activities (http://www.investopedia.com/terms/o/operatingcashflow.asp) - This section measures the cash used or provided by a company's normal operations. It shows the company's ability to generate consistently positive cash flow from operations. Think of "normal operations" as the core business of the company. For example, Microsoft's normal operating activity is selling software.
Cash flows from investing activities (http://www.investopedia.com/terms/c/cashflowfinvestingactivities.asp) - This area lists all the cash used or provided by the purchase and sale of income-producing assets. If Microsoft, again our example, bought or sold companies for a profit or loss, the resulting figures would be included in this section of the cash flow statement.
Cash flows from financing activities (http://www.investopedia.com/terms/c/cashflowfromfinancing.asp) - This section measures the flow of cash between a firm and its owners and creditors. Negative numbers can mean the company is servicing debt but can also mean the company is making dividend payments and stock repurchases, which investors might be glad to see.

and i am no CPA either (still studying), I expected this to (de..)generate some discussion.

This "business" isn't really one, so normal treatment is confusing (to me  )

wrt donations, I believe you are right and had debated so with myself. You can check the financials of other non-profits - Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders, etc. - they put these on the P&L as ""Public Support" (US GAAP). But, until I get some details from Don and how he wants things done I chose to not show them on the P&L, for now. These are not revenues, and this is not an operating company. So, awaiting guidance I tried to at least show the (limited) flows of cash - we can argue about where they properly go. For now, I chose to show donations as sources of financing. We have never before gotten anything but a Balance Sheet (and those were rare...), and maybe that's all that is relevant. The rest is just armchair accounting of Don's hobby!!

On your argument about Investing Cash Flows - the expenses were for a capital project (Project May), and not for operations, per se. I think they are correct where they are. And, that investment will be amortized when the "build" goes into service.

We have no operating costs (thanks to John Nebel) and the only other expenses are software, which I await receipts / accounting for, and for John Nebel to give me a depreciation schedule (I'm guessing 6-months is about normal for software... :p ). When those inputs come in, we can build better financials.

Up to recently - certainly before Project May - this was bootstrap funding to re-imburse Don for webhosting and software costs. With Project May and perhaps other endeavors, it might serve to detail where the funds are going. That is what I'm trying...

When I get detailed instructions from Don I'll revise the statements, accordingly.

Hi, Bo. I applaud you in your efforts to be as detailed and accurate as possible. But IMHO, The only information you really need to convey to us members through financial statements is:

Beginning Cash Balance
+How much money did the Forum take in and from what source
-any collection fees
-How much the LH Forum spent and on what
=Ending Cash Balance (should equal the bank balance)

Which is basically your Cash Flow Statement. You could do a similar statement showing the change in the Net Assets for the Project May if someone needed to know what the value of those assets are. Of course to comply with GAAP, you'd have to show a Balance Sheet, Statement of Operations, Statement of Changes in Net Assets, and a Statement of Cash Flows. And we'd probably have to have a separate fund for the operations of the Forum and separate fund for capital projects such as Project May. But unless we are borrowing money from a bank, have sold stock in this Forum and are reporting to shareholders, or need Financial Statements to include in a return to the IRS, I don't think we should overly complicate what is basically reporting the cash position of the Forum. For all intents and purposes we're just a simple club whose contributions are used to keep the website going. With maybe a side project or two going.

Yea, I agree.

I had gone around-and-around on the options and decisions that could be made. But, I think it's all quite moot.

IMO, all that is needed is a very simple cash-flow statement (non parsed), and the resultant impact to the cash balance.

Don's relationships, and the incredible support of John Nebel (do we really realize the constancy and magnitude of this? Pinch me...) make this a very simple case. So long as this endures, we have no need for a P&L, or OpCF, or FinCF, or anything other than what I consider a modified InvCF, which is what I posted.

Thanks for the input.

louped garouv
04-05-2006, 06:46 AM
i agree too.... best to keep it as simple as possible, and complex as necessary

complexity does not really seem necessary for LHS purposes...

when i first started studying accounting i used to think more things were black and white.... its amazing how many 'clear-cut' issues generate so much discussion WRT accounting treatment....

again, i thank you for your volunteer time and efforts, anything is better than nothing -- and it is prety easy to see what is going on by what you presented

(THAT is what's most important!)

So then, maybe this is sufficient?

This also incorporates a needed edit to adjust for a timing issue - that is of showing the prior period cash balance (rather than a "transfer of funds from D. Leisz").

Expenses
Bo,

Thanks for the financials just posted.

I am curious about the project May expense being the only and major sigificant outlay when for all intensive purposes the project is dormant.

Can you please elaborate.

Ian
(from a pm)Hi, Ian...

I sure can.

First, May is not dormant, but is moving ahead with some new ideas and renewed interest. There was a spell of "deep thought" when no dust was flying but that is now past.

Following are the accounting and receipts - the $470.60 was reimbursed entirely to Widget. I paid him by personal check and then reimbursed myself electronically - this avoids PayPal fees. I have redacted personal info of the Widget and me.

btw, there was some astonishing individual generosity this past Q.

boputnam

Ian pm'd me feeling my posting of his pm was an affront and that it could make him look as if he mistrusted the accounting. On the contrary, I felt his questions raised some good points which might have been shared by others, so I took the effort to post the detail.

Routinely, I don't plan to post detail unless Don thinks it necessary or members express interest. With the free web hosting and support by John Nebel and friends, there really isn't that much detail, afterall.

As always though, the "books" are completely open.

(FWIW - if you want to donate and wish to avoid PayPal fees, a personal check to me gets it done, with documented transfers in the books).

As always, thanks for the support.

As always, thanks for the support. There's recently been a renewed showing of support. I know Don didn't now, and never has, asked for anything from us, but thanks from me - I can see it arriving.

I believe Don will be posting an updated contributors listing in the near future. If you wish to remain anonymous, or prefer the donation be noted solely in your "noms de plume" (pen name) please send a pm to me.

Hi, David...

Yea, although I don't know all the details.

One was damaged early-on during testing of cabinet design(s) over a year-ago; another got (seriously..) dinged in transit. It is my understanding Don had intended on funding this, but he has been out-of-pocket on personal business for some time - his absence started after the order was placed and continues after driver delivery, so the Mods decided to fund this until Don's return. Seemed the least that could be done.

As Don's absence has become unexpectedly prolonged, we have since ceased Project May purchases until his return.

I agree that it's too bad that it took Sanna's passing to make it happen, but God does move in mysterious ways, and has a plan for each of us, as far as we're concerned. To one and all who contributed, "Well done"!! Take care, and God Bless!

Every Good Wish,
Doc

for me its WIN/WIN/WIN* ....I've got so much stuff, we trip over it ...still have boxes and shipping materials from my Great Ebay Adventure days , and being able to print postage from home and have the mailman p/u boxes off my porch makes it painless. Is this site hosted for free? What is the end goal for the cash reserves? For one day when upgrades ($$) are required for the site?

GregSorry, Greg... I missed your query...

Yes, the site is costless to us - the generosity of John Nebel allows this. However, we always offer, and are prepared, to pay our way, should his business model change. We've been amazingly fortunate. And, yes, whenever new versions of the software come out, we try and stay current - this is Don McRitchie's commitment.

The fund raising per se, is also directed for the completion of a gift of speakers - Project May - to Don. However, being an "all volunteer" effort, there's been a number of starts and stops along the way: people moving, changing jobs and losing access to production gear and supplies, people leaving the planet, people changing design, people being busy. It progresses, but deliberately slowly.

Hi, Heather...

Yeah - sorry about the long absences. Lots of touring and local gigs, in-between a quasi dayjob. Busy is as busy does...

Been off most of December. That's been good. At this wizened age, the late nights are harder and harder to shrug off! Next shows are the 27th at Slim's and then NYE at Terrapin Crossroads - those should be fun.
Family gathering here for the upcoming holiday - we had so much fun at Thanksgiving, they want a repeat!

And, you?

Had a lunch with Widget not too long back - he's looking well, and is a deft survivor of a transitioning business!

One tid-bit has been rolling around in my head - interest? We/I never got anything like that from PayPal in the 5+ years I had the helm. I realize the rate is c. 0.033%, but still - every penny counts!

Hi All!

All the news in one spot!

72941

As some have noticed, the donate tab is gone. When I became the treasurer, the web link never made the jump to the new account I set up. This is outside my domain and I don't know what the plan is.

I have received three requests for the direct link to donate to the LHS account. So far none have come in.

If you have indeed sent something in PLEASE let me know so we can figure out where it went!

Once a month I transfer $1 in and then out to be sure the path still exists. So far so good.

Thank you one and all for your support of this site both monetarily and with fun and valuable content.

My best,

HI All!

There has not been much movement on the donation or expense front or so it seems so there has been little to report.

One donation last year was received and deposited but I made no report.

All three donations have come in through the old door and the more recent two were forwarded to me last week and they have been deposited. This is all the activity that I have any record of since the last report.

≈08-11-2017 $33.00

≈04-03-2018 $50.00

≈06-12-2018 $50.00

Since the donation route seems uncertain, if there is anything that I may have missed, please let me know and I will try to figure out where it may have gone.

Thank you sincerely for supporting the Lansing Heritage Forum!

Al the best.
