For those interested in building the 4355 Monitor I have cleaned up most of my drawings. I have several more to go and will try to add them as I get finished.

Baffle layout in sililar to that of the 4350/4350B but there are slight differences in the location of the component cutouts. The big difference is of course the single port on each side of the 2235H's. Diameter is 5 3/8" I.D. and finding the correct size tube is proving to be a challenge. JBL used rolled cardboard type material for the duct tube. My detail showing the dogleg shaped tube is only approximate. I will post more accurate drawings when I actually find the tube material and build the duct.

The internal cabinet dimensions are identical to that of the 4350/B as is the gross internal volume. The Mid-Base box also is the same as the 4350/B. Only differences in internal bracing changes the net internal volume.

All of these details came from the only pair I have had an opportunity to open up and inspect. There may be minor differences between models, but I suspect due to the short production run that they are all the same.

Rick :)

I recently located a source for the odd ball sized tube needed to build the dog let shaped duct tubes on the 4355. Thanks Woody for your help. I have the tubes ordered and will have them soon. I can now complete my 4355 project with the assurance that the tubes are exact.

I ordered extras and will offer the tubes, cut and assembled in the proper fashion, and ready to install in the cabinets, to any of you guys who are comtemplating building the 4355 to factory specs. Four tubes per pair, price to be determined after the material arrives and I determine fab time to get them assembled.

PM if interested.

Here's a couple of pics that show the duct port tubes mounted and aligned to the proper angle. Warning - we have 3 cats and they're always poking their heads into my ports when the grilles are off. No problem with 3" or 4" ports but these 5 3/8" ports are big enough that the slippery little suckers could crawl into the cabinets. A quick 100 db burst would likely force a quick exit but I worry about them leaving something inside my cabinets that won't smell too good. I'll likely not leave the grilles off when I'm not around.

If anyone needs help duplicating these tubes let me know. I have extra tube and the info to cut, assemble and mount them.

Here's a few more pics of my 4355 project. The cabinets are essentially complete. My holdup was solved when I received the correct tube for the ports. Cross overs are being built, woofers are being reconed along with new diaphragms for the 2405's. When everything arrives I will get them fired up. I expect the new charge coupled x-overs to take these to a level beyond the 30 year old factory 3155's.

Cabinets are built from the plans I posted and are EXACT duplicates of those produced by JBL. I doubt anyone could tell the difference side by side, unless of course you noticed that they were new and everyone knows that new ones don't exist. Call me anal maybe, but I struggle always for a certain level of perfection - makes the effort worth while.

Veneer is walnut and stained/oiled to a patina very close to those finished by JBL. A ten foot sheet allows a full side/top/side grain wrap which is a nice added touch that doesn't cost but a few more cents per square foot. I'll mount the grilles on the second cabinet, wrap them up and sit them aside til all of the parts arrive.

More later - Rick

Hi Robh3606,

It seems that most of the data are there EXCEPT the "ducts dimensions", so the box tuning is is not defined.

I built mine some 20 years ago, in an entirely different vertical enclosure, the crossovers are stock 3107’s. I do not know or understand much about charged crossovers but if they offer any audible quality improvement then I am willing to try a pair on my DIY 4350’s as well.

Even if you build with drawings of orignal cabinet there will be slight variations in volume. For exact tuning, you need to make measurements after everything is installed.
The drawing posted above can be used as a good start, make one of the legs longer than the drawing so it can be cut to the appropriate length.
There is a lot of info for tuning on the web

Be happy you chose 4355, in 4350 you have 6 tubes to work with.

Well, I was lost too but after printing a copy and scaling it from Allan's post it was easy. I should have kept the dimensions as I have closed up the speakers now. Yes building these was fun. The 4351's are next. Sorry about the upside down pic! This is a great thread!

i did the length posted on the plan but have to build a bit longer. Tuned at 35Hz. Would like to go down to 27Hz or 25...

JBL 4355 came after the 4350 at the end of 70's. Only 250 pairs have been build.
I read that they are better than the 4350 but I've never heard them.

I don't advise on using the 5235 for high quality hifi unless it's has been fully recapped and modernised and if you need specific EQ for the 4355.

While it is a good starting point, the 43's really their potential with something like Bryston 10B, Westlake etc.
I had a BSS 360 (actually I still have, it's on the shelf waiting for a new owner) and it ran circles around a 5235 but then came the 10B and wiped the floor with both. It was also the first crossover I had that I could not directly distinguish it's sound signature.

I just took a look at the japanese audio-heritage website and I am surprised to see that 4350 actually had a higher bandwidth than 4355.
It's stated as 30Hz-20KHz within 3dB whereas the 4355 "only" does 31.5Hz-18Khz.

Thanks!
the veneer is a sheet 4x10 that I bought from the Woodsource in Manotick, near Ottawa. I think the owner ordered it from Montreal. I think it's a ten mill paper back.

Yes, I used liquid contact cement. I would not use it again. I would use the gel contact. The roller time is very limited.

I used the countertop roller to press everything. Being careful on the edge. I don't know why they don't recommend the roller to press. It works very well!

Over lapping 1/8 would've been enough. I did a 1/4. You just need to be very careful when you place your veneer on top. Verifie that are right on where you are supposed to be. No mistakes allowed!

I used my router to trim the excess...

All together it took me a little bit more than a year to finish but I had my basement in between and of course work. If you work on it every day, I don't know! Maybe 2! It's a lot of work.

Working as a system admin for the NSA. No seriously, it was a lucky hit. Used 'refugee' in an attempt at being funny. Good thing you took it well, need to watch my fingers. :D

Really nice room.
In Canada and Norway we must have such room to get through the winter.

With a good printer, you can create the foilcals.

Yep! As I don't believe GW, we may hit records cold again...

I checked the link, thank you for that but how can I reduce the scale of the 4355 label? I don't know how to do it and I don't have a printer. I can fly but can't print! LOL!

Best regards,

Hi Johan,
For now it's a SAE 2922 for the bass and SAE 3100 for the high.
This is splitted after the pre-amp of course with a 5234A.
that will be changed soon by SAE 2401 for bass and SAE 2201 for high.

SAE 1800 para eq.
Sabine GRQ2 graph eq.
Revox B77 (1HS)
Revox A77
Tascam 112R
CD Denon DN-615
Everything go into a Yamaha M2000.

I bought a SAE 2400 as well... Just to have one...

The effeciency of those speakers are unbelievable!

Great build.... I didn't have enough room for the 4355's in the house so the 4351 project had to be built. Yes ownership feels so good as these are almost impossible to find and buy.. diy is the only option.

This is the second coat. Sorry, it's getting a bit dark here.

Real estate is soo expensive here in Vancouver that I had to leave the 4355's in the garage and build the vertical version to fit in the house....a new house was out of the question. here is a link for the original grill maintenace tags...http://www.ebay.ca/itm/-/291613849096?

Did you use 5/8 for your grills bases? Is it not too thick?

Lovely Work! Thanks for sharing the photos.

You're killing my OCD though with the wires protruding the sheet rock beneath the wall rack without going through a wall plate!

They sell split plates that can be installed without having to disconnect the wiring.

Thank you very much for the link but it's one of the details that I still have to do! I will surround the hole with hoak like I did with the rack and because I have two amps comming tomorrow, I have to make an other rack beside for them and my second B77.

I finished the acoustic panels, thinking of acoustic clouds but that can wait...

I guess not! JBL=North America!
You just need to convert it or buy a SAE tape measure! Pretty easy! And easier than metric!

Google would do it for you!

You will need all the internals, baffle measurement, as well...

Compare to the overall work on those speakers! Converting the measurement is a piece of cake!

It is a lot of work! Believe me...

The baffle is 3/4 also the inner box for the 2202. The rest is 1"

I would not used particule board. I would go with plywood.

I was a bit confused when i saw the video, KenrickSound seems to be making quality work, but still they use cheap particle board. What material did Jbl use for the original 4355 ?

Baffel seems to be very thin compared to modern speakers.

They used to use particule board.
The 4350 used to be made with 3/4 with more re-enforcement.

The 4355's were the best Studio monitor back then. Only around 200 pairs build buy JBL. Extremely rare.

Someone had an original mint pair for sale here not long ago. I don't know how much they have been sold but I would think around $35k.

I don't like modern speakers. Plastic, expensive and ugly...

Im not sure what speakers are you referring for plastic/expensive, but there is lots of speakers on the market that are build much more sturdy and vibration free compared to old Jbl speakers.

Hi,
I think if using proper bracing and correct absorbing material, and original drivers, the rest would be less important...

Yes Kenrick is using Particle board for the Outher and back, than using Plywood (not birch! I guess Fenolic or something cheaper....) and inside brace is made by solid Fir or similar (not solid birch)

than they walnut veneer and walnut solid for the front shape.

most DIY project use full Plywood, birch or not, and inside Solid wood. (here on the forum some used particle board...)

I used full birch plywood 1" for every side and interior(let say 24mm, we don't have 1" in Europe), only the 2202 box is 3/4" (or 18mm in my case)

I don't like MDF and Particle board.

Despite the fact that there are many spanish speakers in the World, I'm not able to understand. Even if there are not working well with latin based languages you can try automatic translation tools:

Where I can obtain the electrical graph of these monitors, or where they can be bought?

You'll find it somewhere in this forum.

May I also use my native language :D
