I have a set of 16 ohm speakers I would like to test, but I only have an 8 ohm receiver.

Is there anything I can do in order to test the speakers without damaging my receiver?

Thank you.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

IF things are as simple as stated,
you just won't be able to play quite as loud. Doubt you'd even notice.

Going the other way (fewer ohms) can be an issue (not enough
current capability available to support what is nominally a voltage-source
output).

So, I can put 16ohms into an 8 ohm system, but I can't put 8ohms into a 16ohm system?

No, the speakers I have up for sale have been tested using the original sellers' receiver.

I would just like to hook up the Stephens Speakers to my own receiver to see how they sound...I have heard rave reviews.

Both the Altecs and Stephens speakers are in perfect working condition.

Thanks for your help!

"Can't" is a strong word. Not recommended (although it may very well not be a
significant problem and might work fine for a particular amplifier/speaker pairing)
is more what I was trying to convey. This is all opinion based on my experience
(for what it's worth to a total stranger over the Internet). Knock yourself out. ;)

When a system impedance is stated it is typically the minimum impedance. Most 8 ohm systems are above 8 ohms over much of the frequency range and shouldn't dip below 8 ohms at any frequency. These ratings are also only "typical", every system will be slightly different. The actual impedance of any system is quite complex changing with frequency and having high peaks at system resonance.

The short story is as stated by grumpy, don't sweat it. If you were to run a load below 4 ohms it would likely be a problem for most amps, but a higher impedance will not be an issue. Your amp will produce less power, but that shouldn't be a problem.

Hey there widget!

I did what you said and you were right - the power was lacking, but I did get a good "feel" on how these speakers perform.

I just listened to the Stephens speakers for the first time. Wow, they are very clear and nice!

However, I am glad I have them up for auction because I cannot see trading out my Altec Valencia's for these.

The winning bidder will be quite pleased.

Thank you for all of your help!
