Subwoofer with two K 140 (or not)?

Hello!

I am planning to build a subwoofer to my 5.1 system. I have a pair of K-140 that I have no use for and would like to use for this purpose, or is it a bad idea?

If not, what cabinet shall I use? Two 4530 cabinets, one 4520 or one 4550?

I woundn't good woofer definately not as subs. Best thing to do is just try them in a freeware box program. Try WinIsd

See for yourself how they look. The program wants to put them in 1.2 cubic ft. In 3cu ft. tuned to 50Hz you are down 10Db at 40Hz At 5 cu ft tuned to 40Hz still down 5 at 40Hz. You can't add any significant boost below the box tunning.

Agreed, the ONLY way I'd even CONSIDER trying to use a K140 as a sub, MIGHT be in a big bass horn. You might be able to get enough extension that way... but I'd still doubt it, given how high the resonance frequency of the K140 is.

I'd either be looking to trade the K140s for something like a 2235, 2234 or 2231 (or even a 2226), or to have the K140s reconed (man, I forgot again, is the K140 one of those baskets that'll work?) as a 2234 or 2235. That would make a MUCH BETTER subwoofer.

Yes, the K130/K140 basket will work, the E130/E140 basket will not. The E130/E140 basket is unique. It would be an excellent idea to get the alnico baskets recharged. Orange County Speaker (http://www.speakerrepair.com/) charges $10 per basket plus shipping. Great Plains Audio (http://www.greatplainsaudio.com/) charges $15 per basket plus shipping, but due to shipping costs they might work out to be a bit less expensive for people on the east coast. I'm getting a pair of 121A's ready to ship to Great Plains Audio for a good old recharge :)

2234/2235 recone kits are rediculously cheap.

I live in Sweden and don’t think it is worth the job (and cost) to recone them. They are in perfect condition and it is hard to put the knife in them and take away the nice cone. I’ll better try to find a pair of 2245H or 2235H. I’m not very found of those foam edges. I just sold away a pair of nice 2205 (to cheap and it irritates me). On the other hand, the 2235 sounds better. I have them in my 4430 and when I changed the foam edge on the 2235 I had the 2205 in the cabinet but they did not sound very well.

The 2235 is a good sub driver, the 2245 even better, I would use a ported enclosure.

With the 4520 duals, You may get a loud 30Hz, no lower, and they are huge.

Some bass players still prefer the K's over the E's, so trade them.

That's fine. It has a 7/8" thick wafer instead of the common 3/4" wafer. It isn't a true 2235H due to the greater flux density in the gap. The E140 basket / 2235H cone hybrid offers a dB or two of midband efficiency at the expense of some VLF extension.

I started buying K140s and 2225s and recone them;)

The 2235 are so rare here that this is going to get interesting:coolness:
