Hello there. New guy at the forum. I've used the search engine and can't find a lick on the JBL L5 series. There are 2 pair local to me that are a very nice price. Does anyone out there have any info? Seems to be a real nice and helpful forum here. Thanks for any info you can give me.

LOOK HERE ! (http://www.lansingheritage.org/html/jbl/specs/home-speakers/1992-l-series.htm)

- You're new / so I guess you haven't yet found the reference library .
- Thanks for searching first ! ( before asking for help )
- The library isn't searchable ( only this forum is ) & the prominence of it's link button ( or more accurately; its' WW11 North Atlantic style camouflage ) does keep it a well known secret for a while .

:) Welcome , BTW ;)

Read this thread:

You can also get some decent reviews here:

The L5 is a very nice speaker. :bouncy:

Thanks for the read. It sure looks like a good speaker to check out the JBL line with. I also have a line on a pair of L150's locally. Found lots of info on this one through the search engine. That L5 was quite an elusive little bugger on the search but it should have come up in Titanium's post. Thanks again and I will keep reading and learning.

OK

I have a pair of L 5's which i bought used. My perceptions
are that first impressions of these speakers are excellent.
They are a 4 drivers system which can take 350 watts. Now
after listning to these over a period of time I can tell you
that they are good speakers but not great. The reason is
these speakers have a dry sound, colored. Kinda like a
sepia toned photograph. If you dont know what a higher
end sound should be they will be fine. They do have a
nice depth to the soundstage and wonderful bass. I am
not sure whats missing, only that they are a bit unsatisfying.

I have not aquired any real high end speakers, but I have
owned some mid-fi speakers such as platinum audio solo's,
alison cd-9's, etc. My recent aquisition of some vintage
JBL's really tell the story. I just bought some L65 Jubals
which you can see here:
http://www.audioheritage.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=10174
I guess i am really starting to get the vintage equipment because
the Jubals even with the incorrect woofer are a much better speaker
in everyway including looks, tweeter, midrange, low range (dont know).
Of course I am powering my speakings with a classic Sansui G 901 db
reciever (G 9000) at 160 watts per.

So my advice is if these are reasonable get them, they can really
handle some watts, and will rock out with a good amp. I bought my
L5's for $250. Just know that the wise folks on this site truly KNOW
that some of the other JBL lines are better.:)

Welcome aboard!

(snip) Just know that the wise folks on this site truly KNOW
that some of the other JBL lines are better.

I'll try not to be offended by this. :rotfl: Fortunately, I don't claim to be wise. Of course, you're correct, there are better lines.

If you hang around for a while, and I hope you do, you'll find one or two of us who respect the old stuff, but don't really think it holds up as well as some of the newer stuff. Our general attitude is "to each his own" as there are so many different preferences on the forum. My assessment of the two speakers in question would be quite a bit different than yours, yet we can agree to disagree.

I'm glad you found something you're excited about. Hopefully, you'll get much pleasure out of it.

Thanks for your warm welcome,

I thinks speakers are alot like artwork, whether you like
realism, abstract, renaissance, etc.

I have little doubt that the Jubals sound better than the
L 5's to my ears and thats my own personal opinion. Its
nice that i at least listen to my own voices inside this
cranium of mine. and its wonderful to get a variety of
opinions too.

Enjoy the searches and the discoveries!

Well, I passed up on the 2 pair of L5's advertised locally. I did, however, pick up a pair of L150's for $200 on e-bay. Here's a link to the one's I purchased:
http://cm.ebay.com/cm/ck/1065-29392-2357-0?uid=50725869&site=0&ver=EOIBSA080805&lk=URL&Item=9711510663 (http://cm.ebay.com/cm/ck/1065-29392-2357-0?uid=50725869&site=0&ver=EOIBSA080805&lk=URL&Item=9711510663)

I know the driver isn't the white driver I have seen on the other L150's but the owner had them up to Speaker Exchange in St. Pete, and since they are an authorized JBL repair center, I'm guessing (hoping) the drivers are factory replacements.
