View Full Version : Best replacement speakers for Sunn 215-SH (folded cab)?

I've been looking at a variety of JBL (primarily) and other manufacturers to replace what seems to be a dead squareback Eminence and a Utah. There's a guy selling a 2220-b locally - most others locally are d-130's and d-120's. From what I read the D or K-140s are probably best but I don't know how well they'd do (or the 2220) in a folded cab. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Hi.

The model number says it all: 215, meaning it wants two 15" woofers. "In the day" when these came out, I believe that they were designed for JBL D/E/K140 drivers. Other brands may work but you can't go wrong with JBL.

For those interested, here's a picture of one.

I was aware of the fact it had 2 15"s. What I could really use the help with is in deciding which speakers to put in it: the 2220s, D,E or K series 140s or say a 2235 (which someone else suggested to me).

Thanks

Well, how INTERESTING to see my name in a reply! If I can be of any help, let me know!

You definitely don't want a 2235 - not appropriate at all. And while any of the JBL 140 series might work, I think you'd be better off with a D/K/E130 series instead.

Here's why. Assuming the speakers are in a standard horn compression chamber, and not ported in some unseen location, that cabinet is too small to do much at any frequencies lower than a 130 series would handle, and the 130 series are more efficient than the 140 series.

Now if you're going to drive it below LF cutoff anyway, then I'd use a 140. How big is that cabinet - it's hard to tell from the pic?

Edit: Sheesh! I just realized the original post was almost 2 years old!

Assuming there is enough back space (probably a bad assumption), W15GTIs and lots of power. Use two wired for 6 ohms. ;)

Kustom amps also used JBL when they started to make a name for themselves. Later on they started using other speakers so the could get higher profits.
I agree with the other posts D140F or later would be the best choice. John
