Welcome to the Lansing Heritage Website

Our mission is to record the accomplishments, history and legacy of James Bullough Lansing. While his name may not be known to many, the legacy of his work touches millions of people. That legacy is the genesis of the loudspeaker industry. He was instrumental in the development of the some of the first successful loudspeaker products. The quality of his work resulted in the Lansing name being associated with the finest in sound reproduction technology. His name is carried on in the corporate identity of two companies, JBL and Altec Lansing. The purpose of this site is to pay homage to the accomplishments of the man and his namesake companies.

The site is quite comprehensive and therefore complex to navigate. There are the equivalent of 200 printed pages of articles on this site and over 2300 pages of product information in the "Library". If you are new to the site, the "History" section is a good place to start since it provides a detailed overview. The "What's New" section gives a chronological listing of every addition to this site since it opened on May 25, 2000. If you are looking for something specific, the "Site Map" gives you one click access to every page on the site. A "Search" utility is available to help find any information contained in the articles. However, the information contained in the library is not indexed since they are scanned images. To return to this page from anywhere on the site, just click on the logo in the top left corner. It should be noted that virtually every image on this site (including the one above) is a thumbnail of a larger, high resolution picture. Just click on the images to open the larger picture.

Virtually all of the images (particularly scanned product literature) are copyrighted and are identified as such. Scanned images of copyrighted JBL documents and photographs are used with the permission of Harman International. Scanned images of copyrighted Lansing Manufacturing, Altec and Altec Lansing materials are used with the permission of Altec Lansing Technologies.

This site is a nonprofit endeavor that is supported by the contributions of its readers and web hosting services donated by CSD Internet. While we have the generous support of Harman International in providing information and access to their key staff for interviews, we are not affiliated with this or any other corporation. The costs of maintaining this site are borne by the developers and the donations of our readers. If you are interested becoming a financial contributor, please click the "Donate" button on the left.
